Is This Your New Belief?: Daily Devotional for 13th April, 2025

Could lighting a candle during meditation symbolize the illumination of a new belief guiding us on our journey to self-discovery?

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

- John 1:5

One dark evening, I decided to dedicate some time to meditate, hoping to dive deep into my thoughts and feelings. I reached for a candle on my table, striking a match to ignite its long wick as I sat in silence. The flame flickered to life, casting a warm glow around the room. In that moment, the darkness inside me began to melt away. The dance of the candlelight was mesmerizing and peaceful, guiding me to focus inward, just like a beam of light in a dark room. I reflected on what was hidden in my heart—dreams, fears, and hopes that I had tucked away in the shadows as the candle burned.

This experience made me realize that lighting a candle during meditation is not just a simple act; it is an invitation to explore parts of ourselves that we often ignore. The candle brought light to my inner landscape, revealing the hidden treasures within—those beautiful qualities and truths we all possess but sometimes overlook, just as a flashlight reveals the hidden corners of a room. I learned that embracing our vulnerabilities in this sacred space leads us to a stronger belief in ourselves. The higher meaning reminds us that seeking understanding within ourselves can turn our darkness into light, helping us develop a new belief system rooted in love, acceptance, and authenticity.

Reflecting on the act of lighting a candle during meditation brings to mind how new beliefs can illuminate our lives, much like the light shining in the darkness described in John 1:5: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Our newfound beliefs can guide us through the shadows of uncertainty and doubt, just as a candle can brighten a dim space. They help reveal the hidden treasures of peace, joy, and understanding within us, allowing us to connect more deeply with ourselves and with God.

When we seek to embrace new beliefs, we are inviting that light into our hearts. This process isn’t always easy; it requires us to let go of old thoughts and patterns that may no longer serve us. However, just like the flicker of a candle flame, this light is powerful. It encourages us to step away from fear and embrace faith. The warm glow can bring hope, reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles. We can nurture these beliefs and allow them to guide us toward the fullness of His light by aligning ourselves with the truth found in God’s Word. As we meditate on our new beliefs today, we should remain open to the transformation they can bring, reminding ourselves of the incredible promise that darkness cannot overcome the light.
