Could we not reflect on how abiding in love today resembles the nurturing of a connection as deep as the comforting embrace shared in a heartfelt hug with someone we cherish?
16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
19 We love because he first loved us.
- 1 John 4:16-19
Sarah felt a deep longing for connection in the heart of a bustling community. She observed how people rushed through their daily lives, often missing out on meaningful interactions. One day, inspired by the simple power of touch, she decided to start a weekly hug club. With just a few flyers and her warm smile, Sarah gathered neighbors at a local park every Saturday morning. The first meeting was a bit awkward, with shy smiles and hesitant steps, but as soon as the hugs began, the atmosphere transformed. Laughter mixed with gentle embraces filled the air, and soon, people started sharing their stories, joys, and burdens. From that moment on, the hug club became a cherished tradition, creating a safe space for everyone to feel accepted and loved.
This act of bringing people together through the warmth of a simple hug is a beautiful reminder of what it means to abide in love. Sarah’s effort emphasized that love isn’t always about grand gestures; sometimes, it’s the small, everyday choices that matter most. Each hug shared was an expression of care, a moment where individuals stepped outside themselves to uplift others. This practice created a bond that helped tackle loneliness, reminding everyone that they belonged. Abiding in love means we actively choose to connect with those around us, opening our hearts to both give and receive affection. When we share kindness, even through a hug, we cultivate a community rooted in compassion and understanding, encouraging us all to embrace love in our daily lives.
I reflect on the stories of Sarah and her hug club and think about the power of love in our daily lives. Sarah created a space where people felt valued and accepted, providing not just hugs but also a genuine connection. It reminds me of 1 John 4:16-19, which tells us that “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” This scripture beautifully highlights how love is not just an emotion; it’s a way to connect with God and with one another. Members of the hug club are essentially practicing this love, making it tangible in their lives and communities.
This brings us to a reflective question: Are we abiding in love today? It can be easy to get caught up in our busy lives, but if we take a moment to pause, we might find opportunities to share love in small ways, just like Sarah. Love can be as simple as a smile, a kind word, or even a hug, and it has the power to change someone’s day, or even their life. When we abide in love, as the scripture encourages, we not only draw nearer to God but also inspire others to do the same. I want to remind myself to live in love, to share it freely, and to be a source of warmth and kindness in my world as I go about my day.
