How Do I Treat Strangers?: Daily Devotional for 16th September, 2025

Isn’t it remarkable how treating strangers with kindness, akin to offering a warm cup of tea to a visitor, can nurture connection and compassion in our world?

2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.

- Hebrews 13:2-3

In 2015, a small town in Canada opened its arms to thousands of Syrian refugees, becoming a shining example of kindness. The townspeople rallied together to offer homes, clothes, food, and friendship as these families arrived, weary and uncertain after long journeys. It was moving to see community members creating welcome baskets filled with essentials and handmade items, learning Arabic phrases to greet their new neighbors, and even organizing events to help everyone share their cultures. This act of love not only provided safety and warmth to those in need but also enriched the lives of the townsfolk, who learned from the rich traditions and stories of their new friends.

Treating strangers with kindness, as shown in this story, serves as a beautiful reminder of our shared humanity. It encourages us to reflect on how we perceive those we do not know. Each stranger has a story, struggles, and dreams worthy of our compassion. We mirror the love and acceptance we wish to receive by reaching out to help others. The deeper meaning in this example urges us to recognize that every act of kindness can create ripples of hope and change in the world. We nurture a spirit of unity by treating strangers with understanding and empathy, reminding ourselves that we are part of a larger family, connected through our shared experiences and sentient struggles.

When we think about how we treat strangers, we can look to the beautiful example set by the small town in Canada that welcomed Syrian refugees in 2015. This community chose to open their arms and hearts, providing homes and support for those who were fleeing difficult circumstances. Their actions remind us of the importance of kindness and compassion, just as the Bible teaches us. Hebrews 13:2-3 reminds us to “Not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so, some have unwittingly entertained angels.”” This scripture challenges us to recognize that every stranger could be someone special, and our kindness could have a deeper impact than we might imagine.

Each time we encounter someone we don’t know, we have the opportunity to share love and grace. We can choose to offer a smile, a helping hand, or even just a moment of our time to listen, just as the town embraced the refugees. The act of treating strangers with kindness does not just benefit them—it also enriches our own lives and faith. When we choose to step outside our comfort zones and show compassion, we embody the love of Christ. Our small acts of kindness can lead to big changes in someone’s life. Seeking to treat every stranger we meet with warmth can create a ripple effect of love in our communities, reminding us all of our shared humanity.

Reflection Questions

  • How can I actively demonstrate kindness to those who are different from me in my community?
  • In what ways can I support and advocate for refugees or those in need, reflecting the compassion shown by the town in Canada?
  • What personal biases or fears do I need to confront in order to better welcome and serve those who are considered strangers in my life?

Today’s Prayer

Lord Jesus,
We come before You, seeking to embody kindness and compassion in our interactions with strangers.
May our hearts be open to offer warmth and understanding, just as a cup of tea brings comfort to a weary soul.
Help us to build connections that reflect Your love, fostering a world where every encounter is a chance to share Your grace.
Amen.
