Are You The Lost Sheep?: Daily Devotional for 22nd April, 2025

Could we not ponder the significance of the parable of the lost sheep and its profound message about the lengths to which one should go to reclaim those who have wandered from their spiritual path?

4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?”
5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’
7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

- Luke 15:4-7

Once upon a time, in a peaceful countryside, a shepherd was tending to his flock of sheep when he noticed that one little lamb was missing. It was a chilly evening, and as the sun began to set, he felt a tug of worry in his heart. After counting the sheep multiple times, he realized that one precious lamb had wandered off into the woods. Rather than staying with the 99 sheep that were safe, the shepherd decided to go out into the dark woods, determined to find the lost one. He called out for the lamb, and after searching for what felt like hours, he finally spotted the frightened little creature shivering behind a bush. With gentle hands, he picked up the lamb, wrapping it close to his chest. Together, they made their way back home, where the flock welcomed the lost sheep back with excited bleats, and the shepherd’s heart swelled with joy.

This beautiful story of the lost lamb teaches us about love and forgiveness. The shepherd didn’t give up on the lamb; he searched high and low, showing us how much he valued each one in his care. Sometimes, we might feel lost or alone in our lives, just like that little sheep. We might stray from the path or face challenges that make us feel distant from our loved ones or even from God. The good news is that we have a loving Shepherd, who welcomes us back with open arms, no matter how far we’ve wandered. This reminds us that every person is precious, and that love can triumph over fear and doubt. Just like the shepherd carried the lamb home, we too can be embraced by love, reminding us that in moments of feeling lost, seeking connection and forgiveness can lead us back to safety and belonging.

In Luke 15:4-7, Jesus tells the story of a shepherd who searches for just one sheep that has gone astray, leaving his ninety-nine behind. This story beautifully illustrates the depth of God’s love for each of us. Just like that shepherd, He cares deeply for us, and no one is too lost or too far gone to be found. When we wander away from our faith or find ourselves in difficult situations, it is comforting to remember that God is actively searching for us, hoping to bring us back into the fold.

This idea of being a lost sheep resonates with many of us at different points in our lives. There are times when we might feel isolated, confused, or unworthy, thinking that we don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Yet, in this parable, we learn that each individual is precious to God. When the shepherd finds the lost sheep, he rejoices and shares his happiness with others. This illustrates that when we reconnect with God, we bring joy not just to Him, but to our community as well. Reflecting on this story reminds us that it’s never too late to turn back to God, no matter how lost we may feel. Are you the lost sheep today? The good news is that love and forgiveness await you.
