Could it be that each moment, decision, and interaction in our lives serves as a verse in the personal pilgrimage of our own unique gospel?
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
- Philippians 2:12-13
I was at the local shelter, volunteering as I often do on weekends, when I met Sarah, a woman who had seen more struggles than many of us can imagine. She sat at the corner table, gently sipping her coffee, her smile brightening the dim room. She began to share her story with me as we got to talking. She spoke of the challenges she faced: losing her job, battling illness, and the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness that came with losing her home. Yet, through it all, there was a glimmer of faith in her eyes. She told me about how each hardship had led her to find strength and support in surprising places, including the shelter where we were sitting. Her journey was one of resilience, and her smile seemed to say that she had transformed her struggles into a reason to hope. I began to reflect on what gospel I am living as I listened. Sarah’s story reminded me that the gospel is not just about our faith in God but also about how we embody that faith amidst our own struggles. Each twist in her tale of hardship spoke of grace, hope, and the potential for new beginnings. It led me to realize that no matter how tough our situations may seem, we can choose to live a gospel that shines light in darkness. The higher meaning here is that our experiences, even the painful ones, can serve a purpose—they can inspire others and remind us that we are not defined by our struggles but by our ability to overcome them. Just like Sarah, we too are called to share our stories as beacons of hope, illuminating the path for others who may feel lost.
I reflected on the gospel I embody in my own life as I listened to her inspiring story. Am I living the good news of hope, love, and service that we see in the teachings of Jesus? This encounter made me recognize the calling in Philippians 2:12-13, where it says to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” reminding me that our daily actions reflect our faith. I realized that how I treat others, especially those facing challenges, is a testament to the gospel I choose to live.
This woman’s resilience and faith propelled me to think about the importance of my own witness. Are my actions aligned with the heart of the gospel? We are not alone in this journey; verse 13 encourages us by saying it is God who works in us to will and to act according to His good purpose. We bring the gospel to life by serving in places like the shelter and sharing the hope we find in Christ. Each encounter is a chance to reflect His light and love, showing the world what it looks like to live out the promise of His salvation. Today, I challenge myself to continually ask, “What gospel am I living?” as I strive to exemplify Christ in all I do.

- In what ways can I actively seek out opportunities to support and uplift those who are facing hardships?
- How does the story of resilience I encountered inspire me to view my own difficulties in a more positive light?
