What Idols Still Exist Today?: Daily Devotional for 13th January, 2026

Could it be that contemporary idols, embodied by cultural figures like pop stars, serve not only as sources of entertainment but also as catalysts for communal experiences, as vividly illustrated by the ecstatic reverence surrounding events like Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour”?

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

- Exodus 20:3-5

In April 1994, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of the iconic band Nirvana, was found dead in his Seattle home, shaking the world. The news hit fans hard, as Cobain had not only changed the landscape of music with his raw and emotional style but had also become a voice for a generation. Thousands of fans gathered outside his home, leaving flowers, candles, and heartfelt notes. Some even held vigil for days, struggling to come to terms with the loss. His music had given them comfort, understanding, and validation in their own struggles—a connection that made them feel as if they had lost a close friend. The event highlighted how deeply intertwined our lives can become with those we idolize, sometimes to the point where they take on a near-divine status in the hearts of their fans.

This deep mourning reveals a modern form of idol worship that still exists today. While we may not bow down to golden statues as people did in ancient times, many still place their faith, aspirations, and identities in celebrities, athletes, or public figures. These idols can distract us from looking inward or building our spiritual foundations, leading us to chase fleeting moments of happiness and validation in the material world. The higher meaning here is a call to reflect on what or who we elevate in our lives. Are these idols leading us towards fulfillment, or are they merely shadowy figures that draw our attention away from deeper truths? Instead of putting our trust in human icons, we are encouraged to seek a relationship with something far greater and everlasting—a relationship with God, who knows us intimately and whose love truly satisfies the longing of our hearts.

In 1994, most people mourned Kurt Cobain, a talented musician. However, this event made me think about how we can sometimes elevate people to a level they shouldn’t be. While it’s natural to feel sadness over a star’s passing, we must remember that our hearts can easily attach themselves to idols, whether they are musicians, actors, or even popular figures in society. This phenomenon isn’t new; in fact, it’s deeply rooted in human nature and has been discussed in the Bible for centuries. God commands us in Exodus 20:3-5, “You shall have no other gods before me.” You shall not make for yourself a carved image…” These verses remind us that anything we place above our relationship with God can become an idol. Today, the idols may not be golden statues, but they can be people, success, or even material possessions that we start to worship. We must take a moment to examine our lives: Are there things we prioritize more than our relationship with God? It’s crucial that we redirect our hearts back to Him, letting go of anything that distracts us from the true source of love and fulfillment. We can find peace and purpose by transforming our admiration for others into admiration for the Creator who made them.
