Do I Honor God Privately?: Daily Devotional for 24th November, 2025

Could it be that those quiet moments of meditation or prayer at sunrise, when the world is still and our hearts are open, are the truest reflections of our private devotion to God?

6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

- Matthew 6:6

A group of monks at a remote monastery in the misty mountains of Tibet decided to hold a silent prayer vigil for world peace in 1978. With no microphones, no banners, and no cameras to capture the moment, they gathered in a small hall, lit only by flickering candles. For days, they sat in deep meditation, their hearts focused on the hope for tranquility in a world often marked by conflict. The stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks seemed to echo their desire for harmony. People from all around the world began to take notice as word of this unusual prayer vigil spread. It was extraordinary to witness how these monks, without a word spoken or a grand display made, could shine a light on the significance of prayer and reflection in a way that resonated deeply with many.

This event raises a fundamental question for each of us: Do I honor God in my private moments? The monks’ silent vigil exemplified dedication and reverence that went beyond public acknowledgment. They focused entirely on their connection with God, undistracted by the world’s noise. In our daily lives, we can easily become consumed by the hustle and bustle, forgetting to carve out moments of quiet time for prayer and reflection. The higher meaning here transcends the act itself; it invites us to consider how we honor God through our inner thoughts and quiet actions when no one is watching. Our private honoring of God can transform our hearts and lives, allowing us to approach each day with a spirit of kindness, gratitude, and love, ultimately influencing those around us, just as the monks’ silent vigil brought peace to a chaotic world, even if they never see the effort exerted in private.

Reflecting on the power of private devotion, I think about the monks in Tibet who chose silence as their means of connecting with God. Their decision to hold a prayer vigil away from the noise of the world truly aligns with Matthew 6:6, where Jesus teaches us that when we pray, we should go into our rooms, close the door, and pray to our Father in secret. This scripture reminds us that our relationship with God is not necessarily about where we are or who is watching, but rather about the sincerity of our hearts. In our daily lives, we easily get caught up in outward appearances and public displays of faith. We often find ourselves wondering, “Am I honoring God enough in front of others?” But the message in Matthew calls us to refocus our intentions. Are we truly devoting time to know Him when no one else is around? This private honor is where our faith can grow deeper and more authentic. Just like the monks who dedicated their time to silent prayer, we too can create sacred spaces in our lives for personal encounters with God, allowing His presence to shape our hearts and minds away from the distractions of day-to-day life. If we can cultivate this private honor, we strengthen our relationship with Him, which naturally will reflect in our public lives.

Reflection Questions

  • How can I incorporate moments of silence and reflection into my daily routine to foster a deeper sense of peace and connection with God?
  • In what ways can I contribute to promoting peace in my community, inspired by the monks’ commitment to prayer and reflection?
  • What distractions in my life prevent me from experiencing the power of quiet reflection, and how can I address them to cultivate a more peaceful mindset?
