Where Is My Deepest Loyalty?: Daily Devotional for 23rd November, 2025

Is it not in the gentle flicker of a candlelight during evening meditation that we discover the true essence of our loyalty to inner peace and personal growth?

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

- Philippians 4:8-9

In 1986, a group of monks gathered in Japan under the quiet glow of flickering candlelight, their hearts heavy yet hopeful. It was a time marked by unrest and violence in the region, casting shadows of fear and despair over the communities. The monks, adorned in their simple robes, stood together in solidarity, their warm candles symbolizing a beacon of peace amidst the chaos. They began to chant softly as night fell, their harmonious voices rising into the evening breeze. The vigil attracted people from all walks of life, people yearning for peace and a moment of respite in the turmoil—their eyes shining bright with a collective hope for healing and unity.

This moving event holds a profound lesson about loyalty and where we place it. The monks demonstrated an unwavering commitment to peace, showcasing that loyalty must often reside in greater ideals rather than in fleeting conflicts. During that vigil, their dedication was not to any political alignment or social agenda, but to a fundamental belief in the power of peace and meditation. This act of solidarity pushed individuals attending the vigil to reflect on their own loyalties—were they tied to anger and division, or could they find strength in compassion and understanding? The higher meaning here is that true loyalty goes beyond our immediate surroundings; it is about placing our hearts and actions in service of something much greater than ourselves. In a world that often tries to pull us into chaos, love, kindness, and the hope for a better tomorrow remind us that our deepest loyalty should be to them.

In 1986, a group of monks in Japan gathered for a candlelight vigil to promote peace and meditation after a troubling wave of violence affected their region. This event reminds us that in the midst of chaos, there is always an opportunity to reflect on our deepest loyalties. We hold our candles, symbolizing hope and serenity, and we are called to examine what—or who—we are truly committed to. Are our loyalties inspiring us toward love, understanding, and peace, or are they leading us down a path of anger and division?

Philippians 4:8-9 encourages us to focus our thoughts on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. This scripture gently reminds us that our deepest loyalty should reflect these qualities. When we anchor our hearts to values that align with God’s goodness, we can foster an inner peace that extends to those around us. The monks lit their candles with the intention of promoting harmony, and we too can light the way for others by holding onto our deepest loyalty to God and His principles. We can become beacons of hope and models of compassion in a world that so desperately needs it.

Reflection Questions

  • How can I incorporate moments of peace and meditation into my daily life to counteract the chaos around me?
  • In what ways can I actively promote peace in my community, inspired by the monks’ example?
  • What personal experiences have shaped my understanding of violence and peace, and how can I use those experiences to foster compassion and understanding in others?
