What Keeps Me From Obedience?: Daily Devotional for 31st October, 2025

Isn’t it intriguing how the constant buzz of daily distractions, much like a cellphone interrupting our meditation, can hinder our ability to fully engage in spiritual obedience?

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

- Hebrews 12:1-2

One sunny afternoon, Sarah felt overwhelmed by the constant buzz of notifications and the pressures of everyday life. It seemed that her phone demanded her attention at every moment, drawing her away from the peaceful connection she craved with herself and nature. After a long day at work, she decided to take a bold step: she turned off her phone and walked to the nearby park. She felt a sense of calm wash over her as she stood among the towering trees and listened to the birds chirping. That hour spent in nature became a sacred time for reflection and spiritual growth, allowing her heart to open and her thoughts to settle. The sun warmed her skin, and for the first time in a long while, she felt truly present.

This experience made Sarah realize how distractions were keeping her from obedience to the spiritual practices she valued. She began to understand that obedience isn’t just about following rules; it’s about aligning her actions with her heart’s deepest desires in her quest for tranquility. She committed to fostering a relationship with God that transcended the noise of daily life by prioritizing time in nature. Through this newfound clarity, she saw that obedience comes from a place of love and intention, rather than fear or obligation. Her willingness to unplug and reconnect not only deepened her spiritual practice but also taught her that it’s in the quiet moments that we often find the answers we seek.

Sarah reflected on the simple joys around her as she spent her hours in nature—a gentle breeze, the rustling leaves, and even the songs of birds. Yet, as peaceful as it was, she quickly discovered that she often struggled with distractions, especially thoughts of her responsibilities and the constant pull of her phone. This made her realize how easy it is to let life’s demands pull her away from the obedience God calls us to. In those moments of tension, she often felt something holding her back from fully engaging with God and the life He intended for her.

Scripture tells us in Hebrews 12:1-2 that we are to “lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely” and “run with endurance the race that is set before us.” For Sarah, this meant identifying what hindered her—her phone, her to-do list, and the noise of the world. She began to shed these distractions by making time for God in His creation, focusing instead on Jesus, the author and perfector of her faith. Each moment she spent outdoors became a lesson in obedience, reminding her that, just like athletes train and prepare for a race, she needed to prepare her heart to follow God with intention. Sarah’s journey in nature transformed her understanding of obedience, showing her that it was about prioritizing her relationship with God over everything else.
