Where Do I Spend Eternity?: Daily Devotional for 23rd December, 2025

Isn’t it during moments like a candlelight vigil, where the gentle flicker of light invites us to ponder, that we find ourselves questioning the very essence of where we might spend eternity?

1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”
2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

- John 14:1-3

At the candlelight vigil for her grandmother, the young woman stood surrounded by flickering lights and the gentle murmur of other mourners. Her voice wavered with emotion as she spoke, yet it was filled with warmth. She shared memories of her grandmother’s beautiful stories—the way she would recount moments of kindness and love, like the time she selflessly helped a neighbor or the times she would gather the family together for meals filled with laughter and joy. Each story painted a picture of a life devoted to others, and with every word, the young woman expressed how much these lessons meant to her. In that dimly lit room, she felt a sense of hope, believing that her grandmother, through her good deeds and a loving heart, had found a special place in eternity.

The young woman reflected on the question of where we spend eternity. Her grandmother’s life had been a living testament that the choices we make echo beyond our time on Earth. She believed that her grandmother built not just a legacy here but also a bright future in the afterlife by sharing stories of love and compassion. This realization led the young woman to a deeper understanding of her own life. It sparked a desire within her to carry forth these values, to embrace kindness as a way of life so that she, too, could create a lasting impact and prepare for her own eternal joy. The vigil became more than a farewell; it transformed into a gentle reminder that our actions shape not only our present but also the destiny of our souls. It echoed the promise that living with love can lead to a joyful reunion in the life to come.

As we gather in moments of reflection, we must ponder the profound question: where do I spend eternity? This thought has been on my mind, especially as I witnessed the love and warmth shared during a candlelight vigil for a beloved grandmother. Her life, filled with stories of love and kindness, created an everlasting impact, offering so much to those she left behind. The young woman shared her grandmother’s inspiring tales, bringing tears yet also a reassuring hope. In those moments of grief, the promise of a joyful reunion beyond this life emerged. Jesus reminds us in John 14:1-3, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Believe in God; believe also in me. Many rooms exist in my Father’s house; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” This scripture lovingly guides us, encouraging us to trust in God’s promise of a home with Him. The grandmother’s stories of compassion are not just tales but reflections of her faith in this promise. They encourage us to live with purpose and kindness, knowing that the love we share today can influence our tomorrow. Our actions echo into eternity, reminding us of the beautiful hope we hold in Jesus Christ as we navigate through our own lives.
