Could it be that the endless scroll of social media is pulling us away from the deeper connection we seek with God during times that are meant for reflection and prayer?
10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
- Psalm 46:10-11
Last week, I found myself lounging on the couch after a long day at work, my phone in hand. I thought I’d just check my social media for a few minutes. Before I knew it, hours had flown by, and I was still scrolling mindlessly through pictures and posts that barely held my interest. My initial intent was to catch up with friends, but instead, I felt a growing sense of emptiness. It was as if I’d feasted on empty calories, filling my time with nonsense instead of nourishing my spirit. I realized that while my body craved rest, my soul longed for meaningful connection with God—a time of reflection, prayer, and gratitude that I had completely overlooked. In this moment, I recognized how easily the noise around me could distract me—the constant notifications and endless streams of information pulling me away from what truly matters. It’s like when we reach for junk food to fill a void; it may satisfy us temporarily but ultimately leaves us feeling unsatisfied and craving something deeper. This experience reminded me that distractions can come in many forms and that I need to be mindful of them. To grow closer to God, I must set aside time for nourishment of my soul through prayer, reading scripture, and quiet reflection. I can find greater peace and connection with my Creator by intentionally turning away from distractions, leading to a richer and more fulfilling life.
In our fast-paced world, distractions from the endless scroll of social media, news alerts, and the demands of everyday life easily capture our attention. Just like junk food may satisfy our cravings in the moment but leaves us feeling empty later, these distractions can pull our focus away from God. I often find myself caught up in the noise, forgetting to take the time to sit in silence with Him. It’s in these moments of distraction that I need to remember Psalm 46:10, which says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” This verse reminds us that in our busyness, we must take a step back to recognize His presence in our lives.
When we become still, we not only acknowledge God’s sovereignty, but we also reconnect with the deep peace that comes from Him. I intentionally carve out moments to listen for His voice as I reflect on my distractions. It’s a gentle nudge to reprioritize my time, to put down the phone, and to turn my heart towards prayer and scripture. I open myself up to experiencing God’s love and guidance more fully by doing this. So today, let’s choose to be still, to quiet the distractions, and to trust that holding on to our relationship with God is the most nourishing choice we can make for our souls.
