¹ This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.
² Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.
³ When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
⁴ The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters.
⁵ Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
⁶ When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.
⁷ Thus all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
⁸ Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
⁹ When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan.
¹⁰ After he fathered Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters.
¹¹ Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
¹² When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel.
¹³ Thus all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.
¹⁴ And Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters.
¹⁵ When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared.
¹⁶ Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.
¹⁷ Thus all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.
¹⁸ When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch.
¹⁹ Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
²⁰ Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
²¹ When Enoch had lived sixty-five years, he fathered Methuselah.
²² Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah three hundred years and had other sons and daughters.
²³ Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years.
²⁴ Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
²⁵ When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech.
²⁶ When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.
²⁷ Thus all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty-nine years, and he died.
²⁸ When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son.
²⁹ and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.”
³⁰ Lamech lived after he fathered Noah five hundred ninety-five years and had other sons and daughters.
³¹ Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.
³² After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis 5:1-32

Genesis 10:1-32: ¹ These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.
² The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
³ The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
⁴ The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
⁵ From these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations.
⁶ The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan.
⁷ The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.
⁸ Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man.
⁹ He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. So it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.”
¹⁰ The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
¹¹ From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah,
¹² and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.
¹³ Egypt fathered Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,
¹⁴ Pathrusim, Casluhim (from whom the Philistines came), and Caphtorim.
¹⁵ Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn and Heth,
¹⁶ the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,
¹⁷ the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,
¹⁸ the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the clans of the Canaanites spread abroad.
¹⁹ And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.
²⁰ These are the sons of Ham, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations.
²¹ To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born.
²² The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.
²³ The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
²⁴ Arpachshad fathered Shelah; and Shelah fathered Eber.
²⁵ To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother’s name was Joktan.
²⁶ Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
²⁷ Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn and Heth,
²⁸ Obal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan.
²⁹ Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan.
³⁰ The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar to the hill country of the east.
³¹ These are the sons of Shem, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations.
³² These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood.

Exodus 3:6-15: ⁶ And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
⁷ Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings,
⁸ and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
⁹ And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.
¹⁰ Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
¹¹ But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
¹² He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
¹³ Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”
¹⁴ God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
¹⁵ God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

Deuteronomy 32:7-9: ⁷ Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you.
⁸ When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance,
when he divided mankind,
he fixed the borders of the peoples
according to the number of the sons of God.
⁹ But the Lord’s portion is his people,
Jacob his allotted heritage.

Joshua 24:2-13: ² And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods.
³ Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many.
⁴ And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.
⁵ And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and afterward I brought you out.
⁶ And I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea. And the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.
⁷ And they cried to the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians and made the sea come upon them and cover them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. And you lived in the wilderness a long time.
⁸ Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan. They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you.
⁹ Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel.
¹⁰ And I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.
¹¹ And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
¹² And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow.
¹³ I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’”

³ Enoch fathered Methuselah, Methuselah fathered Lamech, and Lamech fathered Noah.

¹⁷ The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. And the sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.

²⁹ These are their genealogies: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth, and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
³⁰ Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema,
³¹ Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael.
³² The sons of Keturah, Abraham’s concubine: she bore Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. The sons of Jokshan: Sheba and Dedan.
³³ The sons of Midian: Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
³⁴ Abraham fathered Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.
³⁵ The sons of Esau: Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
³⁶ The sons of Eliphaz: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek.

³⁹ The sons of Lotan: Hori and Homam. Timna was Lotan’s sister.
⁴⁰ The sons of Shobal: Alian, Manahath, Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. The sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah.
⁴¹ The sons of Anah: Dishon. And the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.
⁴² The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
⁴³ Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the people of Israel: Bela the son of Beor, the name of his city being Dinhabah.
⁴⁴ Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place.
⁴⁵ When Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, and the name of his city was Avith.
⁴⁶ Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, and the name of his city was Avith.
⁴⁷ When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.

¹⁹ When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur.
²⁰ Hurai fathered Uri, and Uri fathered Bezalel.
²¹ Afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old, and she bore him Segub.
²² Segub fathered Jair, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead.
²³ Yet Heber the Kenite had separated from the Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh.
²⁴ After Hezron died in Caleb-ephrathah, Abijah, Hezron’s wife, bore him Ashhur the father of Tekoa.
²⁵ The sons of Jerahmeel, the firstborn of Hezron: Ram, his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah.
²⁶ Jerahmeel also had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.
²⁷ And the sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.
²⁸ The sons of Onam were Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur.
²⁹ The sons of Jerahmeel: Ram, his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah.
³⁰ The sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children.
³¹ The son of Appaim: Ishi. The son of Ishi: Sheshan. The son of Sheshan: Ahlai.
³² The sons of Jada, Shammai’s brother: Jether and Jonathan; and Jether died childless.
³³ And the sons of Jonathan: Peleth and Zaza. These were the descendants of Jerahmeel.
³⁴ Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters, but Sheshan had an Egyptian slave, whose name was Jarha.
³⁵ Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore him Attai.
³⁶ And Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad,
³⁷ Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered Obed,
³⁸ Obed fathered Jehu, Jehu fathered Azariah.
³⁹ Azariah fathered Helez, Helez fathered Eleasah,
⁴⁰ and Moab fathered sons; the firstborn was named Moab.
⁴¹ Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered Elishama.
⁴² The sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph. And the sons of Mareshah the father of Hebron.
⁴³ He took Moab’s sister Hushim as his wife and she bore him Jobab, Zibia, Mesha, Malcam,
⁴⁴ Shema fathered Raham, the father of Jorkeam, and Rekem fathered Shammai.
⁴⁵ The son of Shammai: Maon, and Maon was the father of Beth-zur.
⁴⁶ Ephah also concubine of Caleb bore Haran, Moza, and Gazez; and Haran fathered Gazez.
⁴⁷ Jahdai, Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.
⁴⁸ Maacah bore Sheber and Tirhanah.
⁴⁹ She also bore Shaaph, the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah and the father of Gibea; and the daughter of Caleb was Achsah.
⁵⁰ These were the descendants of Caleb. The sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim,
⁵¹ Salma fathered Bethlehem, the father of Netophah.
⁵² Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim had other sons: Haroeh, half of the Menuhoth.
⁵³ The clans of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. From these came the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites.
⁵⁴ The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites.
⁵⁵ and the clans of scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.

² the third, Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;
³ The fifth, Shephatiah, of Abital; the sixth, Ithream, by his wife Eglah;
⁴ These six were born to him in Hebron, where he reigned for seven years and six months. And he reigned thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

¹⁴ Amon his son, Josiah his son.
¹⁵ The sons of Josiah: Johanan the firstborn, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum.
¹⁶ The sons of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son.
¹⁷ And the sons of Jeconiah, the captive: Shealtiel his son,
¹⁸ Malchiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah.
¹⁹ The sons of Pedaiah: Zerubbabel and Shimei.
²⁰ The sons of Jonathan: Merib-baal, who was the father of Micah.
²¹ The sons of Hananiah: Pelatiah and Jeshaiah, his son Rephaiah, his son Arnan, his son Obadiah, his son Shecaniah.
²² The sons of Shecaniah: Shemaiah. And the sons of Shemaiah: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat, six.
²³ The sons of Neariah: Elioenai, Hizkiah, and Azrikam, three.
²⁴ The sons of Elioenai: Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah, and Anani, seven.

² Reaiah the son of Shobal fathered Jahath, and Jahath fathered Ahumai and Lahad. These were the clans of the Zorathites.
³ These were the sons of Etam: Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash; and the name of their sister was Hazzelelponi.
¹⁰ Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.
⁵ Ashhur, the father of Tekoa, had two wives, Helah and Naarah.
⁶ Ezrah fathered Jethro, Jethro fathered Ahijah and Ahijah fathered Zoheth.
⁷ The sons of Helah: Zereth, Zohar, Ethnan
¹⁰ Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.
⁹ Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
¹⁰ Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.
¹¹ Chelub, the brother of Shuhah, fathered Mehir, who fathered Eshton.
¹² Eshton fathered Beth-rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah, the father of Ir-nahash. These are the men of Recah.
¹³ The sons of Kenaz: Othniel and Seraiah. And the sons of Othniel: Hathath.
¹⁴ Meonothai fathered Ophrah; and Seraiah fathered Joab, the father of Ge-harashim, so-called because they were craftsmen.
¹⁵ The sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam; and the sons of Elah: Kenaz.

¹⁷ “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt”
¹⁸ until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph.
¹⁹ He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive.
²⁰ At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house.
²¹ and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.
²² And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
²³ “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.”
²⁴ And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.
²⁵ He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.
²⁶ And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’
²⁷ But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
²⁸ ‘Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
²⁹ At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
³⁰ “Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.”
³¹ When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord:
³² ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.
³³ Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
³⁴ I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’”
³⁵ “This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
³⁶ This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.
³⁷ This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’
³⁸ This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us.
³⁹ Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,
⁴⁰ saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’
⁴¹ And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.
⁴² But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: “Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
⁴³ You took up the tent of Moloch
and the star of your god Rephan,
the images that you made to worship;
and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’
⁴⁴ “Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.”
⁴⁵ Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,
⁴⁶ who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
⁴⁷ But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
⁴⁸ Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,
⁴⁹ “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
⁵¹ “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.”

Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,
You who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.

Hebrews 11:1-40: ¹ Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
² For by it the people of old received their commendation.
³ By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
⁴ By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.
⁶ And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
⁷ By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
⁸ By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
⁹ By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.
¹⁰ For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
¹¹ By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.
¹² Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.
¹³ These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
¹⁴ For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.
¹⁵ If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.
¹⁶ But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
¹⁷ By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son,
¹⁸ of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”
¹⁹ He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.
²⁰ By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau.
By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff.
²² By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.
²³ By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.
²⁴ By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
²⁵ choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
²⁶ He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.
²⁷ By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.
By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.
²⁹ By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.
³⁰ By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.
³¹ By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.
³² And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets—
³³ who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
³⁴ quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.
³⁵ Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life.
³⁶ Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.
They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated.
³⁸ of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
³⁹ And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised,
⁴⁰ since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
