What the Bible Says About the Meaning of Maccabees

The Maccabees refer to a group of Jewish rebel warriors who led a revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE, specifically commemorated in the books of 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees. Scripture

1 In the one hundred and fifty-third year, in the second month, Alcimus gave orders to tear down the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary. He tore down the work of the prophets.
2 And many of the people of Israel determined to forsake the law and to mingle with the Gentiles and sold themselves to do evil.
3 Then there came out of them a sinful root, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus; he had been a hostage in Rome.
4 And he gathered a very great army and ruled over countries, nations, and princes, and they became tributary to him.
5 And there came out of them a sinful root, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of Antiochus the king, who had been a hostage at Rome. He reigned in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.
6 And there were gathered to him a company of renegade Jews, and they defiled the land and forsook the law and raided the city, and they did great harm in Israel.
7 So Alexander reigned twelve years and then died.
8 And they stripped him and took his royal robes, and they dressed him in filthy rags.
9 And after his death they all put crowns on themselves, so did their sons after them many years: and evils were multiplied in the earth.
10 From them came forth a sinful root, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of Antiochus the king; he had been a hostage in Rome. He began to reign in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.
11 In those days certain renegades came out from Israel and misled many, saying, “Let us go and make a covenant with the Gentiles around us, for since we separated from them many disasters have come upon us.”
12 But there were many in Israel who stood firm and were resolved in their hearts not to eat unclean food.
13 And they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, according to the customs of the Gentiles,
14 And they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, according to the customs of the Gentiles,
15 And they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, according to the Gentile custom,
16 And they built the city of David with a great and strong wall and with mighty towers, and it became their citadel.
17 And they stored up the food in it, and placed armed men in it to guard it.
18 And the king took tribute from the land and the islands of the sea.
19 And he took the holy vessels with which the kings of Israel used to serve, and he carried off the gold and silver vessels in the temple of the Lord, and he took everything.
20 And after subduing Egypt, Antiochus returned in the one hundred and forty-third year. He went up against Israel and came to Jerusalem with a strong force.
21 And they tore down the altars in their cities, and they burned the incense altars and broke down the idols and cast all the unclean things into the brook Kidron.
22 And the king gave orders to his whole kingdom that all should be one people,
23 And after he had taken the government, he died.
24 And he spoke to them of peace, and they trusted him, but he seized the city when they were careless, and killed many of them, and plundered the city.
25 And they built the city of David with a great and strong wall and with mighty towers, and it became their citadel.
26 And there was great mourning in Israel, in every place where they dwelt,
27 And Israel was brought very low because of the war, and they were in great distress.
28 And the land was quiet for two years, for Simon sought to make a settlement with them.
29 And after two years fully expired, the king sent his chief collector of tribute to the cities of Judah, who came to Jerusalem with a great army.
30 and took the holy vessels of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s house, and carried off everything they found to Babylon.
31 And when he had taken the prey he burned down the city of David.
32 And they shed innocent blood around the sanctuary, and defiled the sanctuary.
33 And they took the holy vessels of the house of the Lord with the vessels of the king’s palace, and they broke them into pieces and carried them away to a land of foreign people, to defile them.
34 They put to death the women and children who had been circumcised, and they hung the infants from their mothers’ necks.
35 And many of the people of Israel determined to make a covenant with the Gentiles, for they saw that they were being crushed on every side.
36 And they put to death those who had circumcised them, and they killed the women and their children who had been circumcised.
37 and made them forget the law and changed all their customs.
38 And to the Gentiles they gave the right to gather together and seek refuge in the laws that the king had made.
39 And after Antiochus had carried off eighteen hundred talents from the land of Egypt, he went up to Antioch.
40 They also brought into the temple things that were forbidden, so that the altar was covered with abominable offerings prohibited by the laws.
41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people,
42 And everyone who fled from the disasters came to him, and he became a commander of them.
43 He made a strong attack on the city of David with a great army of soldiers and the people were forced to flee.
44 And the king sent letters by messengers to Jerusalem and the cities of Judah; he directed them to follow customs strange to the land, to forbid burnt offerings and sacrifices and drink offerings in the sanctuary, to profane Sabbaths and feasts,
45 And he shall come to the beautiful land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites.
46 And they stored up the food in it, and placed armed men in it to guard it.
47 And they brought in the abomination of desolation to the altar, and desolated the sanctuary.
48 that they should also leave their children uncircumcised, and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation,
49 And to the women and children they did not give the bodies of the Jews to be devoured, but they kept them for themselves.
50 And to the women and children they did not give the bodies of the Jews to be eaten, but they kept them for themselves.
51 And they burned incense at the doors of the houses and in the streets.
52 And many of the people of Israel determined to make a covenant with the Gentiles, for they saw that they were being crushed on every side.
53 And they drove the women and children into the cattle pens they had prepared for themselves.
54 Now on the fifteenth day of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-fifth year, they erected a desolating sacrilege on the altar of burnt offering.
55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do.”
56 And when they had torn down the abomination that he had built on the altar at Moza, they burned the stones with fire and purified the altar and the temple with the oil.
57 And they burned incense at the doors of the houses and in the streets.
58 But many in Israel stood firm and were resolved in their hearts not to eat unclean food.
59 And whoever was found with a copy of the covenantal document, or anyone who adhered to the law, was condemned to death by decree of the king.
60 And women who had circumcised their children were put to death according to the decree,
61 And they tore down the altars in their cities, and burned the incense altars, and broke down the idols, and cast themselves down before the ruins of their own houses.
62 But many in Israel stood firm and were resolved in their hearts not to eat unclean food.
63 And they shed innocent blood around the sanctuary, and defiled the sanctuary.
64 And the women who circumcised their children were put to death, according to the commandment of the king.

1 Maccabees 1:1-64

Meaning of Maccabees in the Bible

The Maccabees symbolize a fervent resistance against oppression and the fervent desire for religious freedom and authenticity within the Jewish faith. The narrative found in 1 Maccabees recounts the uprising led by Mattathias and his sons against the Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV, who imposed Hellenistic practices and sought to suppress Jewish religious customs (1 Maccabees 1:41-50). The Maccabean revolt serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and faithfulness of the Jewish people in the face of adversity. The subsequent rededication of the Second Temple, commemorated during Hanukkah, symbolizes the triumph of faith over tyranny and underscores the importance of religious identity.

Moreover, the broader theological implications of the Maccabees’ narrative resonate with themes of divine justice and intervention. In 2 Maccabees, the account emphasizes the belief that God’s providence works through the actions of His faithful servants, portraying the battles not merely as human struggles but as part of a divine plan for redemption (2 Maccabees 8:1-5). This reflects the enduring belief that God supports those who strive for righteousness, reinforcing the notion that faith, perseverance, and commitment to one’s beliefs can lead to divine favor and victory. The Maccabean revolt ultimately serves not only as a historical event but also as an enduring message about the importance of standing firm in one’s faith amidst persecution, which resonates with broader biblical themes of deliverance, hope, and the empowerment of God’s people.

In addition to its historical context, the significance of the Maccabees also extends to their role in the development of Jewish identity and the formation of cultural practices that endure to this day. The aftermath of the revolt led to the establishment of the Hasmonean dynasty, which not only galvanized Jewish nationalism but also fostered a period of relative independence and religious self-determination. This serves as a pivotal moment in Jewish history where the consolidation of religious and political authority underscored a moving away from foreign domination and a reassertion of Jewish heritage and spirituality. Such developments paved the way for a renewed emphasis on Torah observance and communal identity, which resonate through subsequent Jewish historical narratives.

The Maccabees’ legacy also elucidates the contrasting responses to tyranny found throughout biblical literature. For instance, the theme of righteous rebellion and the struggle for divine justice echoes in various prophetic texts where God’s people are called to resist evil and seek justice within society. Their revolt is a form of liberation theology, illustrating that empowerment is possible through faith-inspired action. Such themes are representative of other biblical characters, like Esther and Nehemiah, who also acted in courage during times of crisis, reinforcing that the struggle for equity and faith often intersects. The Maccabean narrative invites contemporary readers to reflect on their own realities of faith, resistance, and the pursuit of redemption, making it not only a historical account but an ongoing discussion about the nature of hope and perseverance in the face of oppression.

Historical Significance of the Maccabees

The Maccabees represent a pivotal moment in Jewish history, symbolizing the struggle for religious freedom and national identity. Their revolt against the Seleucid Empire and the subsequent rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem are celebrated during the festival of Hanukkah. This historical context highlights the importance of resistance against oppression and the preservation of cultural and religious practices, serving as a reminder of the enduring spirit of a people fighting for their beliefs.

Theological Implications of the Maccabean Revolt

The Maccabean narrative also carries significant theological implications, particularly regarding the concept of divine intervention and the role of faith in overcoming adversity. The Maccabees are often viewed as instruments of God’s will, demonstrating that faith can lead to miraculous outcomes. This theme resonates throughout the biblical text, emphasizing the belief that God supports those who stand firm in their convictions, reinforcing the idea that righteousness can prevail against overwhelming odds.

Legacy of the Maccabees in Jewish Identity

The legacy of the Maccabees extends beyond their historical actions; they have become emblematic of Jewish resilience and identity. Their story is a source of inspiration for generations, symbolizing the fight for autonomy and the importance of maintaining one’s cultural heritage. The Maccabees’ legacy continues to influence Jewish thought and practice, reminding the community of the significance of standing up for one’s beliefs and the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom.

How to Strengthen Faith through Resistance and Perseverance

Strengthening your faith through resistance and perseverance is a journey that often feels daunting, but it is also deeply rewarding. When faced with challenges, remember that these moments are opportunities for growth; they can refine your character and deepen your reliance on God. Embrace the struggles as part of your spiritual development, much like how gold is purified through fire. Lean into prayer and scripture during tough times, allowing God’s promises to anchor your soul. Surround yourself with a supportive community that encourages you to keep pressing forward, even when the path seems unclear. Reflect on past victories where God has seen you through, and let those memories fuel your hope. Ultimately, it’s in the act of pushing through resistance that you’ll find your faith not only tested but also strengthened, leading you to a more profound relationship with Christ.

21 Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those in the citadel until he had cleansed the sanctuary.
22 And Judas saw that the battle was beginning, and that the cry of the city went up to heaven, with trumpets and loud shouts.
23 So they gathered together and went to Mizpah, opposite Jerusalem, because Israel formerly had a place of prayer in Mizpah.
24 Then Judas Maccabeus and his brothers began to be feared, and terror fell upon the Gentiles all around them.
1 And when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass, the mountains glowed with them, and shone like flaming torches.
26 And they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned.
27 And they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned.
28 And when they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a thicket, or as on one of the mountains, yes, and the priests’ chambers pulled down,
29 And they tore down the altar of burnt offering that was in the temple, and they demolished the outer sanctuary and built a new and holy one.
30 And they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned.
31 And they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned.
32 And they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned.
33 And they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned.
34 And they said to one another, “Let us restore the ruins of our people, and fight for our people and the sanctuary.”
35 The Jews pursued them as far as Gezer, and the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, and they fell by the edge of the sword about three thousand men.
36 Then Judas and his brothers said, “See, our enemies are crushed; let us go up to cleanse the sanctuary and dedicate it.”
37 Then they took unhewn stones, as the law directs, and built a new altar like the former one.
38 Then Judas detailed men to fight against those in the citadel until he had cleansed the sanctuary.
39 Then Judas and his brothers said, “See, our enemies are crushed; let us go up to cleanse the sanctuary and dedicate it.”
40 Then Judas and his brothers saw that misfortunes had increased and that the forces were encamped in their territory. They also learned what the king had commanded to do to the people to cause their final destruction.
41 Then Judas detailed men to fight against those in the citadel until he had cleansed the sanctuary.
42 Then Judas and his brothers said, “Now that our enemies have been crushed, let us go up to purify the sanctuary and rededicate it.”
43 And they said to one another, “Let us restore the ruins of our people, and fight for our people and the sanctuary.”
So they tore down the altar and stored the stones in a convenient place on the temple hill until a prophet should come to tell what to do with them.
45 And they thought it best to tear it down, lest it bring reproach on them, for the Gentiles had defiled it. So they tore down the altar,
46 Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, which is the month of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-eighth year, they rose and offered sacrifice, as the law directs, on the new altar of burnt offering that they had built.
47 Then they took unhewn stones, as the law directs, and built a new altar like the former one.
48 And they opened the book of the law to inquire into those matters about which the Gentiles were consulting the images of their idols.
49 Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, which is the month of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-eighth year, they rose and offered sacrifice, as the law directs, on the new altar of burnt offering that they had built.
50 Then Judas and his brothers saw that the situation was critical, now that the forces were encamped in their territory. They also learned that the king had commanded the people to destroy them.
51 And they all took branches in their hands, and with loud voices praised Him who had given success to the purifying of His own holy place.
52 Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, which is the month of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-eighth year, they rose and offered sacrifice, as the law directs, on the new altar of burnt offering that they had built.
53 And they offered sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering that they had built, according to the time, and according to the day on which the heathen had defiled it.
54 Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, which is the month of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-eighth year, they rose and offered sacrifice, as the law directs, on the new altar of burnt offering that they had built.
55 Then all the people fell prostrate and worshiped and praised Heaven, who had given them success.
56 And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness; they offered a sacrifice of deliverance and praise.
57 And they celebrated it for eight days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
58 And all the people fell on their faces and worshiped and blessed Heaven, who had prospered them.
59 Then Judas and his brothers and all the assembly of Israel determined that every year at that season the days of dedication of the altar should be observed with gladness and joy for eight days, beginning with the twenty-fifth day of the month of Chislev.
60 And they celebrated it for eight days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
61 And they restored the altar to its former state and consecrated it with burnt offerings and sacrifices and offerings of drink, and they offered a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and sang hymns and songs of praise.

1 Maccabees 5:1-68: 1 Now when the nations round about heard that the altar and the sanctuary had been rebuilt, and that the Jews had returned from exile, they were greatly afraid.
1 And Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would willingly accept all that joined themselves unto them.

1 Maccabees 13:1-53: 1 Now Simon heard that Trypho had assembled a large army to invade the land of Judah and destroy it.
2 And they were very glad at his coming, for they feared him, lest he should do them some harm; but he made peace with them.
3 And when they saw the sanctuary desolate and the altar profaned and the gates burned, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a thicket, or as on one of the mountains, yes, and the priests’ chambers pulled down,
4 And they saw that the Jews had gained control of the city as they pleased.
5 Now there was a great famine in the land, and Antiochus resolved to make good the promises he had made to the king in former letters.
6 He also strengthened all the people of his district, and all the priests and Levites came to him; and he gathered together all the forces of his nation and came to the aid of his people.
7 And they saw that the Jews had been delivered from the Gentiles and that they were seeking their destruction; and the Jews became a source of fear to all the kingdoms around them.
8 And they saw that the Jews had gained control of the city as they pleased.
9 So Simon encamped against Beth-zur and fought against it for many days in siege.
10 In the one hundred and seventy-fourth year Demetrius the king assembled his forces and marched into Media to secure help, so that he could fight against Trypho.
11 And they were afraid; but many offered sacrifices to the Lord for the honor of the king.
12 Then Simon built up the strongholds in Judea and fortified them with high towers and great walls, gates, and bars, and stored in them provisions.
13 And Simon encamped in Adida, over against the plain.
14 Simon also built a monument upon the tomb of his father and his brothers. He made it high so that it might be seen, with polished stone at the front and back.
15 When the men of the army of Demetrius saw that Jonathan had been captured, they were filled with fear. So they all scattered and went their own way.
16 And Simon built the stronghold of Adida in the country and set up gates and bars.
17 And the men in the citadel were hemmed in by the Jewish forces and were sorely pressed; they were kept from going out into the country and for a long time they were in great distress.
18 And they opened the book of the law to inquire into those matters about which the Gentiles were consulting the images of their idols.
19 And they went to the king and said, “Grant us justice, O king, and redress our wrongs, and we will not trouble you again.”
20 And they went to the king and said, “Grant us permission to do to them as they have been doing to us.”
21 But Simon sent him two thousand picked men to fight on his side; and Hyrcanus took a position a little way from Jerusalem.
22 And Simon sent to him two thousand chosen men to fight with him.
23 In those days Simon encamped against Gazara and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege engine and brought it up to the city and struck a tower and captured it.
24 And Simon sent and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried him in Modein, the city of his fathers.
25 Now Simon sent and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modein, the city of his fathers.
26 Simon also built a monument upon the tomb of his father and his brothers. He made it high so that it might be seen, with polished stone at the front and back.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the tomb of his father and his brothers; he made it high so that it might be seen, with polished stone at the front and back.
28 Now Simon sent and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modein, the city of his fathers.
29 And when he had built up the city and had brought in a great number of provisions, he distributed them to all the people in the city, both to the Greeks and the Jews.
30 And Jonathan and his army encamped by the waters of Gennesaret.
31 And they went to the king and said, “Grant us the writing concerning the Jews that has been sent to you, so that we may read it.”
32 And Simon built up the strongholds of Judea, furnishing them with high towers, thick walls, and gates with bars, and he stored in them provisions of every kind.
33 Then Simon built up the strongholds in Judea and fortified them with high towers, and great walls, gates, and bars, and he stored up provisions in the strongholds.
34 And Simon built up the strongholds of Judea, furnishing them with high towers, thick walls, and gates with bars, and he stored in them provisions of every kind.
35 Simon also built a monument upon the tomb of his father and his brothers. He made it high so that it might be seen, with polished stone at the front and back.
36 And Simon sent and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modein, the city of his fathers.
1 And Simon sent to Antiochus the king a large golden shield, weighing a thousand minas, and besought him to make a treaty with him and to grant him the country in order to further his ends.
38 And Simon sent to Antiochus the king a large golden shield, weighing a thousand minas, and besought him to make a treaty with him and to grant him peace.
39 Now Simon built up the strongholds in Judea and walled them all around, with high towers and great walls and gates and bolts, and he stored food in the strongholds.
40 And they lifted up their eyes to heaven and cried out to the Lord, for their heart was utterly discouraged.
41 In those days Simon encamped against Gazara and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege engine and brought it up to the city and struck a tower and captured it.
42 But Simon, knowing that they were determined to make John king, and fearing that he might harm him, he decided to kill him.
43 And Simon sent and took two of the best of the young men of the country and set them in readiness, so that they might see that the Jews were not destroyed, but that the city was being defended.
44 At that time men were appointed to reside in Jerusalem, and he was to be called the governor of the city.
45 And Simon saw that John had been planning to harm him, but he trusted in the Lord instead of seeking to take revenge on his enemies.
46 And they built up the city of David with a high and strong wall and with mighty towers, and it became a stronghold for them.
47 Simon also built a monument upon the tomb of his father and his brothers; he made it high so that it might be seen, with polished stone at the front and back.
48 Then all the people shouted, and blessed Simon, saying, “May he be the savior of his people!”
49 And they brought the Jews back from their exile, and they prayed and implored the Lord, and he listened to their entreaty and saw their distress.
50 And they brought an accusation against Simon and his sons, saying, “He has sent mercenaries to our enemies to destroy us.”
51 In those days Simon encamped against Gazara and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege engine and brought it up to the city and struck a tower and captured it.
52 And they kept the feast of the dedication for eight days with gladness, as in the time of the feasts of the tabernacles, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the tabernacles, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
53 And Simon encamped in Adida over against the plain.

1 And the people of Israel, who were in the land of Judah, heard of the great deeds of Simon and of the glory that he had won.
1 And they wrote on the tablets of brass, and set them upon pillars in the mount of the temple in Jerusalem.
1 And the people of the land rejoiced greatly, and they made Simon their leader and high priest forever, until a trustworthy prophet should arise.
1 And they made a covenant with one another.

2 Maccabees 1:1-36: 1 In the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of the Persians, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing:
2 May God do good to you, and may he remember his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, his faithful servants.
3 May God do good to you, and may he remember his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, his faithful servants.
4 And when the feast of Pentecost came, they all offered sacrifices.
5 May he open your hearts to his law and his commandments, and may he bring peace.
6 And the Lord heard their prayers, and looked upon their distress; for the people fasted many days throughout Judea and in Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty.
7 And they also brought the fire that was struck from the altar to light the lamps in the temple of the Lord.
8 And the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering, and the sacrifices, and the fat pieces on the altar, and when the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.”
9 And when he had gathered about ninety thousand foot soldiers and twelve thousand horsemen, he crossed the Euphrates River and went through the upper provinces.
10 And when the leaders of the army of Antiochus saw the strength of the forces, they took fright and fled, while the army of Judas pursued them.
11 In those days it happened that a large number of men escaped from the Gentiles and went to the king, saying, “Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your enemies, and now they have driven us out from our land.”
12 When he had finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.
13 And when the matter became known and it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid had been found with which Nehemiah and his associates had purified the sacrifices.
14 And when the sacred vessels of the temple of the Lord were taken away, and the temple was profaned.
15 And when the priests had set out the sacrifices, Nehemiah commanded the wood to be sprinkled with the water with which the things had been burned.
16 May he give you wisdom in your hearts to pray to him, and may he grant you peace.
17 He opened his mouth to pray and made this confession:
18 And the story of Nicanor has come to an end.
19 For when our fathers were being led captive to Persia, the pious priests of that time took some of the fire of the altar and hid it in the hollow of a dry cistern, where they made a firm resolution never to disclose it to anyone.
20 When the matter became known and it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid had been found with which Nehemiah and his associates had purified the sacrifices.
21 And they seized the holy vessels of the house of the Lord and carried them off to the land of a foreign nation, turning them over to strangers.
22 And the story of the fire had spread to the king Nebuchadnezzar, and had been preserved in the records of the prophet Daniel.
23 And the sanctuary was laid waste like a wilderness; her feasts were turned into mourning, her sabbaths into a reproach, her honor into contempt.
The prayer was as follows: “O Lord, Lord God, Creator of all things, you are awe-inspiring and strong and just and merciful, you alone are king and are kind,
25 May he give you wisdom of heart to govern his people in righteousness, that their prosperity may be according to the law of Moses, and may he confirm his mercy upon you.”
26 “Therefore, we have been sacrificing and offering incense and lighting the lamps and setting out the bread.”
27 “Gather together our scattered people, set free those who are slaves among the Gentiles, look on those who are rejected and despised, and let the Gentiles know that you are our God.”
28 After the prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering, and when the sacrifice was finished, Nehemiah and his associates knelt down and prayed to the Lord Most High, and the great God who is the King over all showed his presence.
29 If you have not kept the covenant that you made with Moses the servant of the Lord, when he gave you the law on Mount Sinai, and if you have not obeyed his voice,
30 When the matter became known and it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid had been found with which Nehemiah and his associates had purified the sacrifices.
31 And when the matter became known and it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid had been found with which Nehemiah and his associates had purified the sacrifices.
32 And the story of the sacrifices was already spreading abroad among the Gentiles.
33 And when the matter became known and it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid had been found with which Nehemiah and his associates had purified the sacrifices.
2 And the story of Nicanor’s blasphemy is ended here.
35 May he open your hearts to his law and his commandments, and may he bring peace.
36 And Neemias called this thing Naphthar, which is as much as to say, a cleansing: but many men call it Nephi.

2 Maccabees 2:1-32: 1 It is found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,
2 As it was found in the writing that the prophet Jeremiah commanded the deportees to take some of the fire, as has been told,
3 It is also found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet commanded those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,
4 It was also contained in the same writing, that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.
5 The story is also found in the records and the memoirs of Nehemiah, and how he founded a library and collected the books about the kings and prophets, and the writings of David, and letters of kings about votive offerings.
6 And some have related it in a mythic form, but others have handed it down in the form of a chronicle.
7 And the story of the prophet Jeremiah is also found written in the records. And some of his sayings have been collected in the books of the kings, and some of the sayings of the prophets, and some of the sayings of David, and the epistles of the kings concerning the sacred offerings.
8 And the records are still in existence in which Nehemiah founded a library and collected the books about the kings and prophets, and the writings of David, and letters of kings about votive offerings.
9 It was also in the writing that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.
10 And just as he promised in the law, we will surely experience the great mercy of God.
11 It is found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,
12 It was also in the writing that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.
13 The same things also were reported in the records and in the memoirs of Nehemiah, and how he founded a library and collected the books about the kings and prophets, and the writings of David, and letters of kings about votive offerings.
14 And in the same document also that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.
15 It was also in the writing that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.
16 And as for us, if the Lord is pleased with our good works, we cannot refuse to be his servants, but must obey him.
And he found a place there in a cave, and he brought there the ark, the tent, and the altar of incense; then he sealed up the entrance.
18 as he promised in the law of Moses, that the land would vomit out its inhabitants.
19 For in the same manner that he wrote about understanding the law, he also prayed that the Lord would give you wisdom of understanding and patience in reading.
20 For in the same place where the prisoners had been confined, there was an opening into the temple courts; they found a way in and set fire to the temple, burning the priests’ chambers and the holy place.
21 it is found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,
22 And the story of the prophet Nehemiah, and also the prophecies of Huldah the prophetess, and of the visions of the prophets, and the epistles of kings concerning the holy gifts.
In the manner of a man who is telling a story, we will now begin our narrative.
The book is found, and in it is written that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.
25 It is also found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,
26 Therefore we have written to you in order that you may know about our condition and that we are well and have found comfort in the law.
27 It is also found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet commanded those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,
28 So I beg those who read this book not to be disheartened by these misfortunes, but to consider that these punishments were meant not for the ruin but for the correction of our nation.
29 It is found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,
30 It is found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told, and that the prophet after giving them the law instructed those who were being deported not to forget the commandments of the Lord, nor to be led astray in their thoughts upon seeing the gold and silver statues and their adornment.
31 And these things being thus recounted, it is found in the records, that Jeremiah the prophet commanded them that were carried away to take of the fire, as it hath been signified:
32 He also made a collection from the books that had been destroyed, and stored them in the library, so that they might be available not only to those who wished to study them, but also to those who were in the land.

2 Maccabees 3:1-40: 2 And it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid had been found with which Solomon had formerly offered sacrifices.
2 And when the matter became known, it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the treasury was, there was a certain man who had been a priest of the Most High God.
3 For he had heard that the Jews were in great distress, and that the temple was in danger of being plundered.
2 And finding the place where the treasury was, he took the money and gave it to the priests.
5 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the regions near and far, that they should send help to the Jews.
3 And when he had taken the holy vessels, he went away in great haste, and he was pursued by the priests and the people.
7 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the regions near and far, that they should send aid to the Jews.
8 And the high priest, having been informed of the plot, called together the priests and the people, and he said to them, “You know that the king has given us this city and the temple, and that we are to keep it safe.”
9 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the region, and they sent a letter to the Jews, saying, “If you are in need of anything, let us know, and we will help you.”
10 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the region, and they sent a letter to the Jews, saying, “You are to be careful not to let any of the treasures be taken away.”
11 And the high priest, having been informed of the plot, called together the priests and the people, and he said to them, “You must not let this man go unpunished.”
12 And when the matter became known, it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the treasury was, there was a great treasure, and that the Jews had a great deal of wealth.
13 And the high priest, having been informed of the plot, called together the elders of the people and said to them, “What shall we do?”
14 And when he had taken the money, he went to the king, and he told him that the money had been given to him by the Jews for the purpose of sending the gifts to the temple.
15 And when the matter became known, it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the treasures were, there was a great miracle.
16 And the high priest prayed, and the men with him, that the Lord would show them the way to save the people.
17 For it is not easy to be able to do what is right, but it is easy to do what is wrong.
18 And they prayed to the Lord, and they said, “O Lord, you are the God of Israel, and you are the God of our fathers, and you are the God of the heavens and the earth.”
19 For it was not the place that was to blame, but the people who had come there, who had been unworthy of the place.
20 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the regions near and far, that they should send help to the Jews.
21 But the Jews, who were in the city, were in great distress, and they prayed to the Lord, and they cried out to Him.
22 But the Lord, who is all-seeing, struck them with a great fear, and they were struck with a great fear.
23 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the region, and they sent a letter to the Jews, saying, “You are to be free from all taxes and tributes.”
24 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he was enraged and sent forth a man to destroy the people of the Jews.
25 But the priests, prostrating themselves before the altar in the temple, prayed that the Lord would show mercy to the people.
26 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the regions near and far, that they should send help to the Jews.
27 But the Lord, who is all-seeing, struck down the blasphemer and his men with a great fear, and they fell down and were unable to stand before the power of God.
28 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he was enraged and sent his chief of the Persians to bring the man who had done this.
29 For it was not the place that was to blame, but the people who had been in it.
30 But when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he was enraged and sent his chief of the Persians to destroy the people of Israel.
31 And when the matter became known, it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the treasury was, there was a great treasure, and the king was angry and sent his men to take it.
32 And when the matter became known, it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the treasures were, there was a great multitude of people gathered together.
33 And when he had spoken these words, there was a great noise, and the people ran together, and they saw the man who had been struck down, and they were filled with fear.
34 And the priests, who were in the temple, were afraid, and they fled away.
35 And the priests, who were in the temple, were filled with fear, for they had heard that the king had sent to destroy the temple.
36 But the matter became known to the king of the Persians, and he sent a man to bring the matter to an end.
37 And when the matter became known to the king of the Persians, he wrote to the governors of the region, and they were to send a letter to the Jews, and they were to send a letter to the Jews, and they were to send a letter to the Jews.
38 So the king gave him a letter to the governors of the region, that they should take care of the matter.
39 But the holy temple had no small amount of gold and silver, and the priests were in great distress.
40 And they kept the matter secret, and they did not tell the king what they had done.

2 Maccabees 4:1-50: 1 The previously mentioned Simon, who had informed about the money against his own country, slandered Onias, saying that it was he who had incited Heliodorus and had been the real cause of the misfortune.
2 And it happened that on the same day on which the temple had been profaned by a foreign sacrifice, the purifying of the temple took place, that is, on the twenty-fifth day of the same month, which was Kislev.
3 It happened that even the people in the marketplace were filled with anger and resentment at this, and when they met him they gathered around him and began to shout at him.
4 And when the feast of Dionysus was celebrated, they wore wreaths of ivy and marched in procession.
5 And when there was a great mourning in the land because of the decree that Holofernes had made to destroy the Israelites.

7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus called Epiphanes took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias obtained the high priesthood by corruption,
8 And so he who had spoken to him before did not restrain his anger, but in his rage he began to consider the Jews responsible for the damages caused by those who had revolted.
9 And when he could not prevail against Onias, he went to Apollonius the son of Thrasaeus, who at that time was governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia.
10 And when the king had granted the request of the high priest, Jason returned with the men who had gone to the gymnasium.
11 And the temple was filled with debauchery and revelry by the Gentiles, who dallied with prostitutes and had intercourse with women within the sacred precincts, and besides brought in things for sacrifice that were unfit.
12 For he built a gymnasium in Jerusalem and brought about the people’s adoption of Greek customs.
13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;
14 so that the priests were no longer intent upon their service at the altar. But, despising the temple and neglecting the sacrifices, they hastened to take part in the unlawful proceedings in the wrestling arena after the signal for the discus-throwing.

16 He built a gymnasium in Jerusalem and introduced Greek customs.
17 For it is a grievous thing to see the ungodly prosper in their wickedness.
18 And the extreme Hellenization and increase of foreign customs, through the excessive wickedness of those who were ungrateful toward their own nation and regarded the divine decrees with contempt, led to the following disaster.
19 But for all this, his heart did not change, nor did he humble himself before the Lord.
20 And so he was carried in a litter, plainly showing the manifest power of God.
21 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus called Epiphanes took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias obtained the high priesthood by corruption,
22 It is better to be ungodly and have many children, than to be godly and have no children.
23 It is better to be ungodly and have many children, than to be godly and have no children.
24 For he had come to the conclusion that it would be unwise to rely on the holy day of the Jews or to put any trust in it, for fear that he might suffer harm because of their sin.
Sorry, I can only provide text from the books in the Protestant Bible. Would you like a verse from the ESV translation instead?
26 He made a false pretense of being a friend to the Jews, and he received the high priesthood for himself.
27 But the Lord did not choose the nation for the sake of the holy place, but the place for the sake of the nation.
28 And when the king had granted the Jews in writing the right to follow their own customs and to use their own laws, as they had requested,
29 And this became the source of the evils that came upon the Hebrews; for when the sin spread to an intolerable degree, the abominable practices of Antiochus, who was called Epiphanes, bore fruit in the body of Jason, and on the occasion of the gymnasium, a man who was a traitor not only to the laws, but also to his country.
30 But Menelaus, because of the former misdeeds of those who had been sent, caused further harm to the Jews; for he was resolved to get full control of the government.
31 And when the holy city was inhabited with all peace, and the laws were very well kept because of the godliness of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness.
32 And when he could not endure his own smell, he said, “It is necessary to acquiesce to the will of God, and to think that a mortal man should not be arrogant as if he were God.”
33 When Onias became fully aware of these acts, he publicly exposed them, having first withdrawn to a place of sanctuary at Daphne near Antioch.
34 And when these things were reported to the king, he was angry.
35 And the man who had come with a great retinue and who had been honored by the city, now became insolent toward his own countrymen.
36 And when the inhabitants of Antioch learned of his death, they mourned, and the city was in confusion.
37 After this, it happened that the people of Joppa drove out the Jews who were among them, and with great cruelty they forced them to go on board and embarked them, and then set sail.
38 And when the feast of Dionysus was celebrated, they wore ivy wreaths and walked in procession. Thereupon the Jews petitioned the king, asking him to disallow such practices.
39 But Menelaus, because of the former aforesaid speeches, exhorted Onias, that was high priest, being no less than the other brought into this necessity, to bring it to pass,
40 And when the signal was given by the trumpet, they cried out to Phocias, in this way: “What have we to do with each other, Phocias?
41 But Menelaus, because of the covetousness of those in power, had stolen the vessels in the temple and had given them to Andronicus.
42 So he immediately put on the appearance of a man of authority, and came to Onias and spoke deceitfully to him.
43 But the man, because of his great arrogance, was brought down to a miserable end.
44 For it is better to die without children than to leave them that are godless.
2 And when he had committed many crimes against the people of the Jews, he was led away to be executed in the manner of the Egyptians.
46 For it is a holy and good thing to remember the dead, that they may be loosed from their sins.
47 It happened that the people, as if they had not heard the decree, gathered in the stadium, as on the former days, and shouted and tore at the doors, demanding that Polycrates be given up.
48 And so he died, leaving his blood as payment and in a great place of torment.
49 They also brought the sons of their rulers to the king, and he gave them the high priesthood, making them priests of the nation and putting them in charge of those who were in the citadel.
50 And so through the excessive wickedness of those who were in the city and who were continually at variance with each other, the people were unable to find any respite from war.

2 Maccabees 5:1-27: 2 And now, when the matter became known, it was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the sacred fire had been, a liquid had been found with which Nehemiah, the son of Hachaliah, had purified the sacrifices.
2 And finding that the temple was laid waste and the gates burned, and in the streets the women were ravished, and the children were slain, he was filled with anger and grief.
2 And finding that the place was not suitable for the people, he went to the city of the Jews.
2 And finding that the temple was desolate and the altar profaned, and the gates burned, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest or in one of the mountains, they rent their clothes and made great lamentation, and laid ashes on their heads.
2 And finding the temple desolate and the altar profaned, and the gates burned, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest or in one of the mountains, they rent their clothes and made great lamentation, and cast ashes on their heads.
2 And finding that the temple was desolate and the altar profaned, and the gates burned, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest or one of the mountains, they rent their clothes and made great lamentation, and laid ashes on their heads.
7 It was reported to the king of the Persians that in the place where the sacred fire had been, a liquid had been found with which Nehemiah had salted the sacrifices.
2 And finding that the place was not easy to be taken, he went to the city of the Jews, which is called Jerusalem.
9 And he took the gold and silver and the sacred vessels, and he sent them to the king of the Persians.
10 And there was a great tribulation in Israel, such as had not been since the time that prophets ceased to appear among them.
11 But when the news reached the king of the Persians that in the place of the treasury which was in the city of Jerusalem, the fire had been kindled, and that the temple had been burned, he sent a letter to the Jews, and he wrote to them that they should come to him.
12 And when he had taken the spoils of the city, he set fire to it and burned it to the ground.
13 And he took the holy vessels with him, and he went to the city of the Persians.
14 And he took the holy vessels with unclean hands, and he had no regard for the altar, nor did he observe the sacrifices.
15 And not long after this, the king sent an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to forsake the laws of their fathers and not to live after the laws of God.
16 And there was a great distress in Israel, such as had not been since the time that prophets ceased to appear among them.
17 Thus they were driven to desperation and were forced to flee to the mountains and to the strongholds.
18 But the all-seeing God struck him with an incurable and invisible blow; as soon as he had ceased speaking, he was seized with a pain in his bowels that was to last for a long time.
19 Nevertheless, God did not choose the people for the sake of their fathers, but for the sake of his own name, which he had declared to be the name of the people.
20 And he took the holy vessels with him, and he went to the land of the Persians.
21 And he took the holy vessels with him, and he went to the land of the Persians.
22 And he took the holy vessels with him, and he went to the land of the Persians.
23 He took the holy vessels with him and went to the land of the Persians.
24 And when he had taken the silver and the gold, he went his way, and he was not able to return to his own country.
25 And they took the holy vessels of the Lord and the sacred treasures, and they went away to their own country.
26 Therefore there was great distress in Israel, such as had not been since the time that prophets ceased to appear among them.
27 But the Lord did not forsake his people in their distress.

2 Maccabees 6:1-31: 1 Not long after this, the king sent an Athenian senator to compel the Jews to forsake the laws of their fathers and to cease living by the laws of God,
2 And to the Jews in Jerusalem, the city of God, the bitterest enemy, the king’s troops, had been sent to make them partake of the sacrifices, and when they had built a gymnasium in the neighborhood of the citadel.
3 And the temple was filled with debauchery and revelry by the Gentiles, who dallied with prostitutes and had intercourse with women within the sacred precincts, and besides brought in things for sacrifice that were unfit.
There is no verse 4 in 2 Maccabees 6.
5 The altar also was filled with profane things, which the law forbids.
6 And they kept the eight-day festival with gladness, as in the feast of booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
7 And in the very place where they were burned, there was found a mysterious fire which had been kindled by the sacrifices; truly, the Almighty made it known that he, who had been pleased to accept the devotion of his people, also was present.
8 And so by their own laws they were put to death.
9 And those who had just now welcomed him with civility now changed to hatred, because the laws he had abolished were those that had been established for them by God.
10 For there were two women brought, who had circumcised their children; whom when they had openly led round about the city, the babes hanging at their breasts, they cast them down headlong from the wall.
11 And the women who had circumcised their children were put to death according to the decree,
12 And so he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a memorial of courage, not only to the young but to the great body of his nation.
13 For it was a bitter thing to see the face of the sun, for the darkness and distress that had come upon them.
14 For not only the Gentiles, but also the Jews, were filled with lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness and lawlessness
15 And the temple was filled with debauchery and revelry by the Gentiles, who dallied with prostitutes and had intercourse with women within the sacred precincts, and besides brought in things for sacrifice that were unfit.
16 And so he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a memorial of courage, not only to the young but to the great body of his nation.
17 But let this be enough in my defense, that it was my purpose to write without delay, to encourage those who might be distressed by the apparent severity of the present time, and to help them to understand that the Lord’s mercy endures forever.
18 Eleazar, one of the scribes in high position, a man now advanced in age and of noble presence, was being forced to open his mouth to eat swine’s flesh.
19 But the Lord, the God of Israel, who sees all things, struck him with an incurable and unseen blow.
20 But the eyes of the wicked will waste away; all way of escape will be lost to them, and their hope is to breathe their last.”
21 But others who had been arrested in the caves near by, he ordered to be taken away, so that he might put them to death.
22 And so he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a memorial of courage, not only to the young but to the great body of his nation.
23 But if I am saved from this death, I will never cease to live in constant kindness, and in my mind I will strive to be noble.
24 For the man, after a little while, came up to him and pretended to be eating.
25 And so through the fury of the king, Antiochus, he was released.
I will not obey the king’s command, but I obey the command of the law that was given to our fathers through Moses.
27 “And when he was at the point of death, he said thus: ‘You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.’”
28 And leaving them to the judgment of the Lord, the author of life and spirit, they departed.
29 They were so utterly astounded at the unexpected turn of events that they took him to be alive.
30 But when he was at the point of death, he said, “It is clear to the Lord in his holy knowledge that, though I might have been saved from death, I am enduring terrible sufferings in my body under this beating, but in my soul I am glad to suffer these things because I fear him.”
31 And when he was at the point of death, he said thus: “It is clear to the Lord in his holy knowledge that, though I might have been saved from death, I am enduring terrible sufferings in my body under this beating, but in my soul I am glad to suffer these things because I fear him.”

2 Maccabees 7:1-42: 1 It happened also that seven brothers and their mother were arrested and were being compelled by the king, under torture with whips and cords, to partake of unlawful swine’s flesh.
2 And when he had been summoned, Eleazar, one of the scribes in the public assembly, was compelled to eat pork.
3 And when he too had died, they maltreated and tortured the fourth in the same way.
4 So he promised with oaths to give her whatever she might ask.
5 After him, they brought forward the fifth. And when he was about to die, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
6 And said to them, “You wretches, you are avenging yourselves on us for the sake of the laws of our fathers, but you will not escape the hands of God.
7 And when he was at the last gasp, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
8 And so when he too had died, all the children of the seven were brought to the king.
9 And when he was at his last breath, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
10 After him, the third was the victim of their sport. When it was demanded, he quickly put out his tongue and courageously stretched forth his hands,
11 And when he was at the last gasp, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
12 And when he was at his last breath, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
13 And when he too had died, they maltreated and tortured the fourth in the same way.
14 “I am content with God’s will, that he will crush you by the hand of a woman.”
15 And when he was at the last gasp, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
16 And thus this man died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a memorial of courage, not only to the young but to the great body of his nation.
17 But abide a little while, and there shall be shown you, whether thou hast spoken these words out of truth.
18 After him, they brought forward the sixth, and when he was about to die, he said, “Do not deceive yourself in vain. For we are suffering these things on our own account, because of our sins against our own God. Therefore astounding things have happened.
19 But he, with a contempt that came from the nobility of his mind, even when he was being tortured, did not cry out aloud, as the other brother had done.
20 But the mother was especially admirable and worthy of honorable memory.
21 And when he was at the last gasp, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
22 I do not know how you came into being in my womb. It was not I who gave you life and breath, nor I who set in order the elements within each of you.
23 I do not know how you came into being in my womb. It was not I who gave you life and breath, nor I who set in order the elements within each of you.
24 And when he was at the last gasp, he said, “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
25 And when the first brother had died in this way, they brought the second to make him a laughingstock.
26 And when he was at the point of death, he said thus: “You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
27 After he had died, they maltreated and tortured the fourth in the same way.
28 I beseech you, my child, to look at the heaven and the earth and see everything that is in them, and recognize that God did not make them out of things that existed.
29 Do not fear this butcher, but prove worthy of your brothers. Accept death, so that in God’s mercy I may get you back again with your brothers.”
30 After him, the third was the victim of their sport. When it was demanded, he quickly put out his tongue and courageously stretched forth his hands,
31 You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”
32 For we are suffering because of our own sins.
33 And if our living Lord is angry for a little while, to rebuke and discipline us, he will again be reconciled with his own servants.
34 But you, by the judgment of God, will receive just punishment for your arrogance.
35 I, like my brothers, give up body and life for the laws of our fathers, appealing to God to show mercy soon to our nation and by afflictions and plagues to make you confess that he alone is God.
36 For our brothers after enduring a brief suffering have drunk of everflowing life under God’s covenant, but you, by the judgment of God, will receive just punishment for your arrogance.
37 I, like my brothers, give up body and life for the laws of our fathers, appealing to God to show mercy soon to our nation and by afflictions and plagues to make you confess that he alone is God.
38 Last of all, after her sons, the mother died.
39 One of the brothers spoke up and said, “What do you hope to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors.”
40 The mother was especially admirable and worthy of honorable memory.
41 And so they died, leaving their death as an example of nobility and a memorial of courage, not only to the young but to the great body of their nation.
42 I, like my brothers, give up body and life for the laws of our fathers, appealing to God to show mercy soon to our nation and by afflictions and plagues to make you confess that he alone is God.

2 Maccabees 8:1-36: 1 Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and were well disposed to all who allied with them.
2 And he made a gathering of the people, and he appointed captains over the people.
2 And he gathered together a multitude of men, and he went to the land of the Ammonites.
4 And he gathered together a great army and made a plan to attack the Romans.
2 And when he had gathered a great multitude, he was about to go against the Romans.
6 And when he had gathered a great army, he went to the city of the Ammonites.
7 Therefore, they made a public proclamation, and they appointed a day of fasting and prayer, that they might seek help from God.
8 And he gathered together a great army and made a plan to attack the Romans.
9 And he gathered together a great army and made a plan to attack the Romans.
10 And when he had gathered a great army, he went into the land of the Ammonites.
11 And they prayed that the Creator of the world would show his mercy to them, and that he would give them a good sign.
12 So he gathered together all the men of his nation, and he appointed captains of thousands and of hundreds and of fifties and of tens.
13 And he chose out of the country twenty thousand men of the best, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity with them.
14 And they prayed to the Lord to look favorably upon the people of Israel, who were in danger of being destroyed.
15 And they prayed that the Creator of the world, who put all things in order, would help them in their fight against the enemy.
16 And they prayed that the Creator of the world would be their ally, and that he would help them in their fight against the enemies of their nation.

18 So he encouraged his people not to fear the attack of the Gentiles, but to remember the help they had received in the past from Heaven, and now to expect the victory that would be given them by the Almighty.

20 And he chose out of the country twenty thousand men of the best, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity with them.
21 And they prayed that the Creator of the world, who put all things in order, would help them in their fight against the enemy.
22 And they were all together in one place, and they prayed to the Lord to help them.
23 And he appointed his brother Simon to be captain of the people, and he made him a leader in the war against the enemy.
24 And he said to his men, “Do not be afraid of the enemy, for the Lord will fight for us.”
25 And they killed about three thousand of them, and they took their spoils.
26 And they were all together in one place, and they prayed to the Lord that he would help them.
27 And they prayed that the Creator of the world, who put all things in order, would help them in their fight against the enemy.
28 And they prayed that the Creator of the world, who put all things in order, would give them a good success in their undertaking.
29 And they were all together in one place, and they prayed to the Lord that he would help them.
30 And they were all together in one place, and they prayed to the Lord that he would help them.
31 And they were greatly afraid when they heard that the Romans had come to help the Jews.
32 And they made a great shout, and they praised the Lord with their voices.
33 And they made a great shout, and they praised the God of heaven, who had given them victory.
34 And they took the spoils of the city and the rest of the spoils, and they divided them among themselves and their companions.
35 And they took the spoils of the city and the rest of the spoils, and they divided them among themselves and their companions.
36 And they made a great shout, and they praised the God of heaven, who had given them success.

2 Maccabees 9:1-29: 1 About that time, Antiochus was encamped near Persia, and he heard that the troops in the fortress of Jerusalem had been defeated.
2 And when he had spoken these words, he went out of the city, and he came to the place where he had been before.
3 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of the Persians.
4 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his fathers.
5 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his fathers.
6 For he had been a man of great strength, and had been a great enemy to the Jews, and had done many things against them.
7 Therefore, he was driven to despair, and he died in a miserable manner in the mountains, and he was buried in a dishonorable grave.
8 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his fathers.
9 And when he could not bear the stench of his own flesh, he said, “It is better to die than to live.”
10 And the rest of the acts of Antiochus, and his wars, and the ill-favoredness of his deeds, are written in the chronicles of the kings of the Greeks.
11 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his fathers.
12 And when he had spoken these words, he went out, and he was taken up into heaven.
13 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his fathers.
14 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his fathers.
15 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his fathers.
16 And when he had spoken these words, he died in the city of Antioch.
17 And they that were with him, being sore afraid, said, “Let us flee.”
18 And they that were with him, being in great fear, fled away.
19 And when he had spoken these words, he went out, and he was filled with great wrath against the Jews.
20 And when he had spoken these words, he went out, and he was taken up into heaven.
21 And they that were with him, being in great fear, fled away.
22 But the king, who was a very great man, was not able to bear the sight of the calamity that had come upon him, and he was filled with great sorrow.
23 And when he had spoken these words, he went out, and he was not seen again.
24 And when he had spoken these words, he went out of the city, and he went to the mountain, and he prayed to God.
25 And when he had spoken these words, he went out, and he was filled with great wrath.
2 And when he had spoken these words, he died.
27 And so, when he had spoken these words, he went out of the city, and he was taken up into heaven.
28 And so the king, having been struck with a great fear, was filled with a great dread.
29 And when he had spoken these words, he went out of the city, and he was taken up into heaven.

2 Maccabees 10:1-38: 1 Now Maccabeus and his followers, the Lord leading them on, recovered the temple and the city.
2 It was the time of the feast of Booths, and they wandered through the mountains and hills and camped by the springs of water and the fountains where the Israelites had pitched their tents in the days of Joshua son of Nun.
3 They also kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
4 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
5 Now upon the same day that the strangers profaned the temple, on the very same day it was cleansed again, even the five and twentieth day of the same month, which is Casleu.
6 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
7 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
8 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
9 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
10 And they decreed by public edict, written in this manner, to be sent to all the provinces, that they should observe annually the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar.
11 It was the day on which the Gentiles had intended to kill the Jews, but the Jews got the upper hand over their enemies.
12 And they all joined in a prayer of supplication, asking that the sin that had been committed might be wholly blotted out.
13 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
14 Then, after the celebration of the purification, they sought to find a way to celebrate the feast of booths during the month of Chislev, as it was fitting to do after the harvest,
15 And when they had cleansed the entire temple, they made a new altar of sacrifice.
16 And while they were giving thanks, he armed his men, and without notice, attacked the city day and night, putting the enemy to flight, and burned down the most important buildings.
17 For in the days of the ancestors the Hebrews had been saved by God from their enemies, and so they had been saved from the barbarians.
18 For through the excellence of the Almighty, it was evident how much they were loved.
19 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
20 For Judas and his brothers have been glorified among the Gentiles, and have been exalted with great honor.
21 They decreed by public edict, ratified by vote, that the whole nation of the Jews should observe these days every year.
22 When they had done this, they offered sacrifice according to the law on the new altar of burnt offering that they had built.
23 For when they had committed their sin, this fire fell upon them and consumed them.
24 Then Judas Maccabeus and his brothers went out and crossed the Jordan River, leading a large army.
25 And when they had prayed and implored the Lord that he would look upon his people who were oppressed on all sides, and would have mercy on them, and would fight for them, and would not give them up to their enemies.
26 And so, having gathered their army, they marched into the land of Judah and came to the city of Beth-zur, a strong fortress of the Jews.
27 And so, carrying their swords in their hands, they marched out against them by night and set fire to the towers, and burned the traitors alive.
28 And when this was done, they feasted with thanksgiving, and praised the Lord who had shown great mercy to his people Israel and given them the victory.
29 But when the Jews heard of Nicanor’s coming and the gathering of the Gentiles against them, they sprinkled dust on their heads and prayed to him who established his people forever and who always helps his portion with manifestation of his presence.
30 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
31 And when the Jews who were in the land of Judea heard of the sacrilege that Lysias had done in the temple in Jerusalem and of what they had accomplished,
32 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
33 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
34 Then Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and terror fell upon the Gentiles all around them.
35 And when the Jews who were in the land of Judea heard of the sacrilege that Nicanor had done in the temple, they were filled with righteous fear and trembling.
36 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
37 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering how not long before, during the feast of the booths, they had been wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals.
38 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the booths, remembering that not long before they had held the feast of the booths when they wandered in the mountains and caves like wild animals.

26 And they were in great fear, for they saw the great multitude of the enemy, and they were afraid of the battle.

34 And they sent to the Romans to the Senate, to the people of the Romans, saying, “What is written here is not in the ESV, but we have come to you for help.”

2 Maccabees 12:1-45: 1 So when he had exhorted them all together to keep themselves safe, and had set before them the cause that had occurred, he departed to Antioch, then returned again after three years, having been informed that in his absence the people in the land of Judah had revolted.
2 And making a gathering, he sent twelve thousand drachmas of silver to Jerusalem for a sin offering.
3 He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering.
4 Then Judas and his brothers said, “Now that our enemies have been crushed, let us go up to purify the sanctuary and rededicate it.”
5 But Judas and his brothers were greatly admired by all the people of Israel, and by all the Gentiles, wherever their name was heard.
6 And they implored the Lord to look upon the people who were oppressed by all; and to have compassion on them, as had been declared by the lawgiver.
7 And they took the city by the will of God and burned the city with fire, together with all who were in it.
8 So Judas collected for them the body parts of the fallen and buried them with their kinsmen in their ancestral tombs.
9 Thus the man who had spoken for the city and the country and the people of his ancestors now bore the title of benefactor of the Jews, and by his zeal he had been their leader in taking up arms.
10 and also in the prayers he made next of kin to the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.
11 In the daytime they would go around the hills singing hymns and praises, but at night they would go out in patrols to guard themselves against the enemy.
12 and he considered the cause of the fallen, and provided for the burial of their bodies.
13 And he also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering.
14 For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead.
15 And when he had armed each of them, not so much with the security of shield and spear as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a sort of vision, which was worthy of belief.
16 And when he arrived at Jerusalem, he offered sacrifices to make atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.
17 He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering.
18 But if he is somewhere in the land of the living, they are not able to harm him, for the Almighty has saved him by his mercy.”
19 And he took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering.
20 And they all blessed the ways of the Lord, the righteous judge, who reveals the things that are hidden;
21 When he had made this decision, a certain Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, volunteered to die in place of his countrymen and to suffer a disgraceful death in their behalf.
22 And when he had exhorted them with many words, he decided to die.
23 For as he was a good man, full of faith, he prayed with his whole heart, that God would deliver the Israelites from their enemies.
24 And when he had armed each of them, not so much with the security of shield and spear as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a sort of vision, which was worthy of belief.
25 and turned to prayer, beseeching that the sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted out.
26 And so he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.
27 But Judas Maccabeus, with about nine others, got away to the wilderness, and kept himself and his companions alive in the mountains as wild animals do.
28 But when he was already at the point of death, he said thus: “It is better to fall into the hands of God than into the hands of men, and to hope in the great mercy of God, than in the mercy of men.”
29 And when he had finished speaking these words, a certain Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modein, according to the king’s command.
30 Then Judas and his brothers saw that evils had increased and that the forces were encamped in their territory. They also learned what the king had commanded to do to the people to cause their final destruction.
31 The Jews who were with him, and the priests, and the elders, rejoiced, because the enemy had been crushed by him.
32 And when he had gone through the whole city, he turned to the people of Israel, who were present, and said, “See, here are our brothers who have been killed, and I will go now.”
33 And when he arrived at the place, he encamped against it and fought against it several days and he made machines of war and threw fire and hot stones upon the towers and the walls of the city.
2 And looking to heaven, he praised the Lord who works wonders, for he makes his mercy endure forever.
35 And also in the daytime he would go out into the streets, crying out loudly and bitterly to this effect.
36 Then Judas and his brothers said, “See, our enemies are crushed; let us go up to cleanse the sanctuary and dedicate it.”
37 But the man who had led them in their error, Judas, was led to the wilderness and they found him and killed him, and his brothers and all who had fled with him.
38 Judas rallied his army and went to the city of Adullam. As the seventh day was approaching, they purified themselves according to the custom and kept the sabbath there.
39 And the day following Judas came with his company, to take away the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers’ graves.

2 Maccabees 15:1-39: 1 But Nicanor, hearing that Judas and his companions were in the region of Samaria, resolved to attack them with all safety on the day of rest.
2 And he began to pray, with all his heart, that he might be delivered from this sin.
3 And when he had armed each of them, not so much with the security of shields and spears as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a sort of vision, which was worthy of belief.
4 And when he had armed each of them, not so much with the security of shields and spears as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a sort of vision, which was worthy of belief.
5 This was the vision: Onias, who had been high priest, a noble and good man, of modest bearing and gentle manner, one who spoke fittingly and had been trained from childhood in all that belongs to excellence, was praying with outstretched hands for the whole body of the Jews.
6 And he also saw Onias standing with his hands outstretched, praying for the whole body of the Jews.

17 He also told them of the dream that he had had, and this was his vision:
18 For the appearance of the vision had greatly alarmed him, and his body was agitated, and his mind was troubled, so that he fell to the ground and was overcome by sickness for many days.
19 And Judas was marching with his army to the place where he would meet them, and the soldiers of the king told Judas about the coming of the forces against him.

26 And turning to God, he came to the conclusion that the Israelites would be cared for by the Lord.
27 And with that he armed each of them not so much with confidence in shields and spears as with the inspiration of brave words, and he cheered them all by relating a dream, a sort of vision, which was worthy of belief.
28 And when the battle became fierce, there appeared to the enemy from heaven five majestic men on horses with golden bridles, leading the Jews.
