³ Then she said, “Here is my servant Bilhah; go in to her, so that she may give birth on my behalf, that even I may have children through her.”
⁴ So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her.
⁵ And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.
⁶ Then Rachel said, “God has judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan.
⁷ And Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
⁸ Then Rachel said, “With mighty wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister and have prevailed.” So she called his name Naphtali.
⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

¹⁴ In the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
¹⁵ But she said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?” So Rachel said, “Then he may lie with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
¹⁶ When Jacob came from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he lay with her that night.
¹⁷ And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.
¹⁸ So Leah said, “God has given me my wages because I gave my servant to my husband.” So she called his name Issachar.
¹⁹ Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son.
²⁰ Then Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she called his name Zebulun.
²¹ Afterward she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah.
²² Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.
²³ She conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away my reproach.”
²⁴ And she called his name Joseph, saying, “May the Lord add to me another son!”

Genesis 30:1-24

Numbers 1:1-54: ¹ The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying:
² “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.”
³ from twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company.
⁴ And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers.
⁵ These are the names of the men who shall assist you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
⁶ from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;
⁷ from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;
⁸ from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;
⁹ from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;
¹⁰ from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
¹¹ those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.
¹² from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
¹³ Of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran.
¹⁴ those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
¹⁵ from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.”
¹⁶ These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.
¹⁷ Then Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named,
¹⁸ and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their ancestry by their clans and their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head,
¹⁹ as the Lord had commanded Moses.
²⁰ The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
²¹ those listed of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.
²² Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
²³ those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.
²⁴ Of the sons of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
²⁵ those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
²⁶ Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
²⁷ those listed of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.
²⁸ Those listed of the sons of Issachar, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
²⁹ “those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.”
³⁰ from the sons of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael,
³¹ Those listed of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred.
³² Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
³³ those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.
³⁴ from twenty years old and upward, all who can go to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company.

³⁶ Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:

⁴⁰ Of the sons of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
⁴¹ Those mustered of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.
⁴² Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
⁴³ Those are the clans of the sons of Naphtali, 80,500.
⁴⁴ These are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers’ house.
⁴⁵ So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel—
⁴⁶ All those listed were 603,550.
⁴⁷ But the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe.
⁴⁸ For the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
⁴⁹ “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel.”
⁵⁰ but appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle.
⁵¹ When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death.
⁵² The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard.
⁵³ But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.”
⁵⁴ Thus the people of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses; so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, each one in his clan, according to his father’s house.

Numbers 2:1-34: ¹ The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
² The people of Israel shall camp each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ houses. They shall camp facing the tent of meeting on every side.
³ Those to camp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah by their companies, the chief of the people of Judah being Nahshon the son of Amminadab,
⁴ And his division, the tribe of Gad, and the chief of the people of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.

¹⁴ Then the tribe of Gad, the people of Gad, by their fathers’ houses, and the number of their men of war, who could draw the sword, was 45,650.
¹⁵ “The standard of the camp of the people of Judah set out first by their companies, and over their company was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.”
¹⁶ All those listed of the camp of Reuben, by their companies, were 151,450.
¹⁷ Then the tent of meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; as they camp, so shall they set out, each in position, standard by standard.
¹⁸ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim by their companies, the chief of the people of Ephraim being Elishama the son of Ammihud,
¹⁹ Then the tribe of Manasseh, the chief of the people of Manasseh being Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur,
²⁰ “On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben by their companies, the chief of the people of Reuben being Elizur the son of Shedeur,
²¹ Then the tribe of Naphtali, the chief of the people of Naphtali being Ahira the son of Enan,
²² Then the tribe of Benjamin, the chief of the people of Benjamin, being counted, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war,
²³ Those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.
²⁴ All those listed of the camp of Ephraim, by their companies, were 108,100.
²⁵ On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan by their companies, the chief of the people of Dan being Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
²⁶ and his army as listed by their companies, the chief of all the people of Gad being Eliasaph the son of Reuel,
²⁷ and those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher, the chief of the people of Asher being Pagiel the son of Ochran.
²⁸ This was the order of march of the people of Israel by their companies, when they set out.
²⁹ Then the tribe of Naphtali, the chief of the people of Naphtali being Ahira the son of Enan, – Numbers 2:29

³³ but the Levites were not listed among the people of Israel, as the Lord commanded Moses.
³⁴ So the people of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses; so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, each one in his clan, according to his father’s house.

Numbers 7:1-89: ¹ On the day when Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle and had anointed and consecrated it with all its furnishings and had anointed and consecrated the altar,
² the chiefs of Israel, heads of their fathers’ houses, who were the chiefs of the tribes, who were over those who were listed, offered
³ and they brought their offering before the Lord, six wagons and twelve oxen, a wagon for every two of the chiefs, and for each one an ox. They brought them before the tabernacle.
⁴ The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

² “Make two silver trumpets. Of hammered work you shall make them, and you shall use them for summoning the congregation and for breaking camp.
³ And when they blow a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”
⁴ And if they blow only one, then the chiefs, the heads of the tribes of Israel, shall gather themselves to you.
¹⁰ When you blow an alarm, the camps that are on the east side shall set out.
⁶ And when you blow an alarm the second time, the camps that are on the south side shall set out. An alarm is to be blown whenever they are to set out.
⁷ But when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow a long blast, but you shall not sound an alarm.
⁸ And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets. The trumpets shall be to you for a perpetual statute throughout your generations.
⁹ And when you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be remembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.
¹⁰ On the day of your gladness also, and at your appointed feasts and at the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings. They shall be a reminder of you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”

²⁵ Then the standard of the camp of the people of Dan, acting as the rear guard of all the camps, set out by their companies, and over their company was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
²⁶ and over the company of the tribe of the people of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
²⁷ And over the shoulder of the camp of the sons of Issachar was the standard of the camp of the sons of Zebulun.

²⁹ And Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do good to you, for the Lord has promised good to Israel.”
³⁰ But he said to him, “I will not go. I will depart to my own land and to my kindred.”
³¹ And he said, “Please do not leave us, for you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will serve as eyes for us.
³² And if you do go with us, whatever good the Lord will do to us, the same will we do to you.”
³³ So they set out from the mount of the Lord three days’ journey. And the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them three days’ journey, to seek out a resting place for them.
³⁴ And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day, whenever they set out from the camp.
³⁵ And whenever the ark set out, Moses said, “Arise, O Lord, and let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee before you.”
³⁶ And when it rested, he said, “Return, O Lord, to the ten thousand thousands of Israel.”

Numbers 13:1-33: ¹ The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
² “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.”
³ So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the people of Israel.
⁴ These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
⁵ from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.
⁶ from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
⁷ from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

¹⁰ and bring some of the fruit of the land.

¹⁶ These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
¹⁷ Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country,
¹⁸ And see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many,
¹⁹ Whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.

²¹ So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.
²² They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron.
²³ And they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs.
²⁴ That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there.
²⁵ At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land.
²⁶ And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
²⁷ And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
²⁸ However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.
²⁹ The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”
³⁰ But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.”
¹³ But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.”
¹³ And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
³³ And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

Numbers 26:1-65: ¹ After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest,
² “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.”
³ Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,
⁴ And as the Lord said to Moses, “List all the men of Israel, twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.”
⁵ Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;
⁶ Of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.
⁷ These are the clans of the Reubenites, and those listed were 43,730.
⁸ And the sons of Pallu: Eliab.
⁹ The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, chosen from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the Lord,
¹⁰ and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, and they became a warning.
¹¹ But the sons of Korah did not die.
¹² The sons of Simeon according to their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites;
¹³ among these the clans of the people of Reuben: the clan of the Hanochites, the clan of the Palluites, the clan of the Hezronites, and the clan of the Carmites.
¹⁴ These are the clans of the Simeonites, twenty-two thousand five hundred.
¹⁵ The sons of Gad according to their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites;
¹⁶ These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.
¹⁷ These are the clans of Reuben, and those listed were 43,730.
¹⁸ These are the clans of the people of Gad, as they were listed, 40,500.
¹⁹ The sons of Judah were Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.
²⁰ The sons of Judah according to their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; and of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.
²¹ The sons of Perez: Hezron, and Hamul.
²² These are the clans of Judah as they were listed, 76,500.
²³ The sons of Issachar according to their clans: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the clan of the Punites;
²⁴ These are the clans of Naphtali, and those listed were 45,400.
²⁵ These are the clans of Issachar as they were listed, 64,300.
²⁶ The sons of Zebulun according to their clans: of Sered, the clan of the Seredites; of Elon, the clan of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites.
²⁷ The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
²⁸ The sons of Joseph according to their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim.
²⁹ The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir was the father of Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.
³⁰ These are the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; of Helek, the clan of the Helekites;
³¹ But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord.
³² Now the sons of Jokshan were Sheba and Dedan.
³³ Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
³⁴ These are the clans of Manasseh, and those listed were 52,700.
³⁵ These are the sons of Ephraim according to their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites. Of Becher, the clan of the Becherites. Of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites.

³⁸ The sons of Benjamin according to their clans: of Bela, the clan of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites;

⁴⁴ The sons of Asher according to their clans: of Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the clan of the Beriites.
⁴⁵ The sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malchiel, the father of Birzaith.
⁴⁶ The name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.
⁴⁷ The sons of Jahdai: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.
⁴⁸ The sons of Naphtali by their clans: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
⁴⁹ The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the clan of the Ardites; of Naaman, the clan of the Namites.
⁵⁰ These are the clans of Naphtali according to their clans. And those listed were 45,400.
⁵¹ These were the registered men of the people of Israel: 601,730.
⁵² The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
⁵³ “Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names.”
⁵⁴ To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance according to its numbers.
⁵⁵ But the land shall be divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.
⁵⁶ According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between the larger and the smaller.
⁵⁷ This was the list of the Levites according to their clans: the clan of Gershon, the clan of Kohath, and the clan of Merari.
⁵⁸ These were the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. And Kohath fathered Amram.
⁵⁹ The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister.
⁶⁰ And to Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
⁶¹ But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord.
⁶² Those listed were 23,000, every male from a month old and upward, for they were not listed among the people of Israel, because there was no inheritance given to them among the people of Israel.
⁶³ These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
⁶⁴ But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.
⁶⁵ For the Lord had said of them, “They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Numbers 34:1-29: ¹ The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
³⁴ Command the people of Israel, and say to them, When you enter the land of Canaan (this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, the land of Canaan as defined by its borders),
³ your south side shall be from the wilderness of Zin alongside Edom, and your southern border shall run from the end of the Salt Sea on the east.
⁴ And your border shall turn south of the ascent of Akrabbim, and cross to Zin, and its limit shall be south of Kadesh-barnea.
⁵ And the border shall turn from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and its termination shall be at the sea.
⁶ “And as for the western border, you shall have the Great Sea and its coast. This shall be your western border.
⁷ And the western border shall be the Great Sea with its coast. This shall be the western border.
⁸ And from Mount Hor you shall draw a line to Lebo-hamath, and the limit of the border shall be at Zedad.
⁹ Then the border shall extend from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. And the border shall extend to Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim).
¹⁰ And the boundary shall turn from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and its termination shall be at the sea.
¹¹ And the boundary shall go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain. And the boundary shall go down and reach to the shoulder of the Sea of Chinnereth on the east.
¹² And the border shall go down to the Jordan, and its limit shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land as defined by its borders all around.”
¹³ Moses commanded the people of Israel, saying, “This is the land that you shall inherit by lot, which the Lord has commanded to give to the nine tribes and to the half-tribe.
¹⁴ For the tribe of the people of Reuben by fathers’ houses and the tribe of the people of Gad by their fathers’ houses have received their inheritance, and also the half-tribe of Manasseh.
¹⁵ The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
¹⁶ The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
¹⁷ These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun.
¹⁸ And you shall take one chief from every tribe to divide the land for inheritance.
¹⁹ and the name of the third shall be Zebulun.
²⁰ And of the tribe of the people of Judah and the tribe of the people of Simeon were taken as their own.
²¹ And the tribal heads of the people of Israel shall allocate the land for inheritance according to the number of names.
²² And the leaders of the two tribes that are to be given to the Levites for inheritance, the leaders of these two tribes shall be with the Levites when the land is apportioned for inheritance.
²³ And of the people of the half-tribe of Manasseh, 21,000,
²⁴ the tribal chief of the Naphtalites, Ahira the son of Enan.
²⁵ And the chief of the fathers of the clans of the Gileadites, Jezer the son of Machir, was the chief of the Gileadites.
²⁶ “Of the people of Joseph, namely of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
²⁷ And the prince of the tribe of the people of the children of Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli.
²⁸ And from Mahanaim it shall go on to Zedad,
²⁹ These are the men whom the Lord commanded to divide the inheritance for the people of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Deuteronomy 33:1-29: ⁵ Thus the Lord became king in Jeshurun,
when the heads of the people were gathered,
all the tribes of Israel together.
² He said, “The Lord came from Sinai and dawned from Seir upon us; he shone forth from Mount Paran; he came from the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand.
³ Yes, he loved his people, all his holy ones were in his hand; so they followed in your steps, receiving direction from you,
⁴ Moses commanded us a law, as a possession for the assembly of Jacob.
⁵ Thus the Lord became king in Jeshurun,
when the heads of the people were gathered,
all the tribes of Israel together.
⁶ “Let Reuben live, and not die,
but let his men be few.”
⁷ And this he said of Judah: “Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah, and bring him in to his people. With your hands contend for him, and be a help against his adversaries.”
⁸ And of Levi he said, “Give to Levi your Thummim, and your Urim to your godly one, whom you tested at Massah, with whom you quarreled at the waters of Meribah,
⁹ who said of his father and mother, ‘I regard them not’; he disowned his brothers and ignored his children. For they observed your word and kept your covenant.
¹⁰ They shall teach Jacob your rules and Israel your law; they shall put incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar.
¹¹ Bless, O Lord, his substance,
and accept the work of his hands;
crush the loins of his adversaries,
of those who hate him, that they rise not again.”
¹² Of Benjamin he said, “The beloved of the Lord dwells in safety. The High God surrounds him all day long, and dwells between his shoulders.”
¹³ And of Joseph he said, “Blessed by the Lord be his land, with the choicest gifts of heaven above, and of the deep that crouches beneath,
¹⁴ with the choicest fruits of the sun and the rich yield of the months,
¹⁵ with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness and the favor of him who dwells in the bush. May these rest on the head of Joseph, on the pate of him who is prince among his brothers.

²⁰ And of Gad he said, “Blessed be he who enlarges Gad! Gad crouches like a lion; he tears off arm and scalp.
²¹ And he provided the first part for himself,
for there a ruler’s portion was reserved;
yet he carried out the command of the LORD,
the statutes of Israel.
²² And of Dan he said, “Dan is a lion’s cub that leaps from Bashan.”
²³ And of Naphtali he said, “O Naphtali, sated with favor, and full of the blessing of the Lord, possess the lake and the south.”
²⁴ And of Asher he said, “Most blessed of sons be Asher; let him be the favorite of his brothers, and let him dip his foot in oil.
²⁵ Your bars shall be iron and bronze,
and as your days, so shall your strength be.
²⁶ “There is none like God, O Jeshurun,
who rides through the heavens to your help,
through the skies in his majesty.
²⁷ The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy before you and said, Destroy.
²⁸ So Israel lived in safety, Jacob lived alone, in a land of grain and wine, whose heavens drop down dew.
²⁹ Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, the shield of your help, and the sword of your triumph! Your enemies shall come fawning to you, and you shall tread upon their backs.”

Joshua 19:40-48: ⁴⁰ The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the people of Dan, according to their clans.
⁴¹ The territory of their inheritance included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir-shemesh,
⁴² Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,
⁴³ When the boundary of the people of Dan was lost to them, the people of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and after capturing it and striking it with the sword they took possession of it and settled in it, calling Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor.
⁴⁴ This is the inheritance of the tribe of the people of Asher according to their clans—these cities with their villages.
⁴⁵ When they had finished distributing the several territories of the land as inheritances, the people of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua the son of Nun.
⁴⁶ Me-jarkon and Rakkon with the territory over against Joppa.
⁴⁷ When the territory of the people of Dan was lost to them, the people of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and after capturing it and striking it with the sword they took possession of it and settled in it, calling Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor.

Judges 13:1-25: ¹ And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
² There was a certain man of Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. And his wife was barren and had no children.
³ And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold, you are barren and have not borne children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.
⁴ Therefore be careful and drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean,
⁵ For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.
⁶ Then the woman came and told her husband, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name,
⁷ But he said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. So then drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”
⁸ Then Manoah prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, please let the man of God whom you sent come again to us and teach us what we are to do with the child who will be born.”
⁹ And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field. But Manoah her husband was not with her.
¹⁰ And the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.”
¹¹ And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And he said, “I am.”
¹² And Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, what is to be the child’s manner of life, and what is his mission?”
¹³ And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful.
¹⁴ She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing. All that I commanded her let her observe.”
¹⁵ Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Please let us detain you and prepare a young goat for you.”
¹⁶ And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord.)
¹⁷ And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that, when your words come true, we may honor you?”
¹⁸ And the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?”
¹⁹ So Manoah took a young goat with a grain offering and offered it on the rock to the Lord, to the one who works wonders, and Manoah and his wife were watching.
²⁰ For when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the angel of the Lord went up in the flame of the altar.
²¹ The angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the Lord.
²² And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, for we have seen God.”
²³ But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering at our hands, or shown us all these things, or now announced to us such things as these.”
²⁴ And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. And the young man grew, and the Lord blessed him.
²⁵ And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Judges 18:1-31: ¹ In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the people of Dan was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in, for until then no inheritance among the tribes of Israel had fallen to them.
² So the people of Dan sent five able men from the whole number of their tribe, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to explore it. And they said to them, “Go and explore the land.” And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.
³ When they were by the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite. So they turned aside and said to him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is your business here?”
⁴ And he said to them, “Thus and so has Micah dealt with me: he has hired me, and I have become his priest.”
⁵ And they said to him, “Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed.”
⁶ And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the Lord.”
⁷ Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they lived in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.
⁸ And when they came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them, “What do you report?”
⁹ They said, “Arise, and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you do nothing? Do not be slow to go, to enter in and possess the land.
¹⁰ When you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people. The land is spacious, for God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.”
¹¹ So, the five men went on and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they lived in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.
¹² And they took what Micah had made, and the priest who belonged to him, and they came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire.
¹³ And they passed on from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.
¹⁴ Then the five men who had gone to scout out the country of Laish said to their brothers, “Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, household gods, a carved image, and a metal image? Now therefore consider what you will do.”
¹⁵ And they turned aside there and came to the house of the young Levite, at the home of Micah, and asked him about his welfare.
¹⁶ And the six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the people of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.
¹⁷ Now the five men who had gone to scout out the land went up and entered there and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the 600 men armed with weapons of war.
¹⁸ And when these went into Micah’s house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
¹⁹ And they said to him, “Keep quiet; put your hand on your mouth and come with us and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?”
²⁰ And the priest’s heart was glad. He took the ephod and the household gods and the carved image and went along with the people.
²¹ So they turned and departed, putting the little ones and the livestock and the goods in front of them.
²² When they were a good way from the home of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house were called out, and they overtook the people of Dan.
²³ When they shouted for the men of Dan, who turned around and said to Micah, “What is the matter with you, that you come with such a company?”
²⁴ And he said, “You take my gods that I made and the priest, and go away, and what have I left? How then do you ask me, ‘What is the matter?’”
²⁵ And the people of Dan said to him, “Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household.”
²⁶ So the people of Dan went their way. And when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his home.
²⁷ But the people of Dan took what Micah had made, and the priest who belonged to him, and they came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire.
²⁸ There was no deliverer because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone. It was in the valley that belongs to Beth-rehob. Then they rebuilt the city and lived in it.
²⁹ And they named the city Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor, who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was Laish at the first.
³⁰ And the people of Dan set up the carved image for themselves, and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.
³¹ And they set up Micah’s carved image that he made, as long as the house of God was at Shiloh.

¹⁵ These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was overflowing all its banks, and put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
¹⁶ Some Benjaminites and Judahites came to the stronghold to David.
¹⁷ David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in friendship to help me, my heart will be joined to you; but if to betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong in my hands, then may the God of our fathers see and rebuke you.”
¹⁸ Then the Spirit clothed Amasai, chief of the thirty, and he said, “We are yours, O David, and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers! For your God helps you.” Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.
¹⁹ Some of the men of Manasseh deserted to David when he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul. (Yet he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines took counsel and sent him away, saying, “At peril to our heads he will desert to his master Saul.”)
²⁰ As he went to Ziklag, these men of Manasseh deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of the thousands in Manasseh.
²¹ They helped David against the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor and were commanders in the army.
²² For day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like an army of God.
²³ These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops who came to David in Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, according to the word of the Lord.
²⁴ The men of Judah bearing shield and spear were 6,800 armed troops.

²⁷ Jehoiada, the leader of the house of Aaron, and with him 3,700,

²⁹ And from the Benjaminites, the kinsmen of Saul, 3,000, of whom the majority had to that point kept their allegiance to the house of Saul.
³⁰ From Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command.
³¹ Of the half-tribe of Manasseh 18,000, who were expressly named to come and make David king.

³⁹ They were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them.
⁴⁰ Moreover those who were near to them, even as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen, abundant provisions of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

1 Chronicles 27:1-15: ¹ This is the number of the people of Israel, the heads of fathers’ houses, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all matters concerning the divisions that came and went, month after month throughout the year, each division numbering 24,000.
² Over the first division for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel. And in his division were twenty-four thousand.
³ He was from the sons of Perez, and was chief of all the commanders of the army for the first month.
⁴ Dodai the Ahohite was in charge of the division of the second month; in his division were 24,000.
⁵ The third commander, for the third month, was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the chief priest; and in his division were 24,000.
⁶ This is the Benaiah who was a mighty man of the thirty and in command of the thirty; Ammizabad his son was in charge of his division.
⁷ The fourth for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
⁸ The fifth commander, for the fifth month, was Shamhuth the Izrahite.
⁹ The sixth for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite.
¹⁰ The seventh for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the sons of Ephraim.
¹¹ The eighth for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite of the Zerahites.
¹² The ninth for the ninth month was Abiezer of Anathoth, a Benjaminite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
¹³ The tenth for the tenth month was Maharai of Netophah, of the Zerahites; and in his division were 24,000.
¹⁴ The eleventh commander, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah of Pirathon, an Ephraimite.
¹⁵ The twelfth for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; and in his division were 24,000.

Revelation 7:1-8: ¹ After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree.
² Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea,
³ saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”
⁴ And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:
