Scripture

Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the women of the land.
² And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humiliated her.
³ His soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob. He loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.
⁴ So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this girl for my wife.”
⁵ Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah. But his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob held his peace until they came.
⁶ And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.
⁷ The sons of Jacob had come in from the field as soon as they heard of it, and the men were indignant and very angry, because he had done an outrageous thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing must not be done.
⁸ But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him to be his wife.
⁹ Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
¹⁰ You shall dwell with us, and the land shall be open to you. Dwell and trade in it, and get property in it.”
¹¹ Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.
¹² Ask me for as great a bride price and gift as you will, and I will give whatever you say to me. Only give me the young woman to be my wife.
¹³ The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah.
¹⁴ They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us.
¹⁵ Only on this condition will we agree with you—that you will become as we are by every male among you being circumcised.
¹⁶ Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people.
¹⁷ But if you will not listen, behold, I am afraid of you, and the Lord has made you go away from me.
¹⁸ Their words pleased Hamor and Hamor’s son Shechem.
¹⁹ The young man did not delay to do this, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter.
²⁰ So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying:
²¹ These men are at peace with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give them our daughters.
²² Only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us to become one people—when every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.
²³ Will not their livestock, their property and all their animals be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us.”
²⁴ All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
²⁵ On the third day, when they were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and came against the city while it felt secure and killed all the males.
²⁶ They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and went away.
²⁷ The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
²⁸ They took their flocks and their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field.
²⁹ All their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and plundered.
³⁰ Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.”
³¹ But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”

Genesis 34:1-31

Exodus 2:1-10: ¹ Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman.
² The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.
³ When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.
⁴ And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.
⁵ Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.
⁶ When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
⁷ Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”
⁸ Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.
⁹ She said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”
¹⁰ When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

Leviticus 18:6-18: ⁶ “None of you shall approach any one of his close relatives to uncover nakedness. I am the Lord.
⁷ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, which is the nakedness of your mother; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness.
⁸ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness.
⁹ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether brought up in the family or in another home.
¹⁰ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son’s daughter or of your daughter’s daughter, for their nakedness is your own nakedness.
¹¹ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, brought up in your father’s family, since she is your sister.
¹² You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s relative.
¹³ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s relative.
¹⁴ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother, that is, you shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt.
¹⁵ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife, you shall not uncover her nakedness.
¹⁶ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness.
¹⁷ You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and of her daughter, and you shall not take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter to uncover her nakedness; they are relatives; it is depravity.
¹⁸ And you shall not take a woman as a rival wife to her sister, uncovering her nakedness while her sister is still alive.

Numbers 27:1-11: ¹ Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
² They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the chiefs, and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying,
³ Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin. And he had no sons.
⁴ Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.”
⁵ So Moses brought their case before the Lord.
⁶ And the Lord said to Moses:
⁷ The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them.
⁸ And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
⁹ And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.
¹⁰ and if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
¹¹ “If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

Deuteronomy 22:13-21: ¹³ “If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then hates her,
¹⁴ then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father’s house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
¹⁵ then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate.
¹⁶ “And the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to marry, and he hates her;
¹⁷ then both the men who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days.
¹⁸ Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him,
¹⁹ then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father’s house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
²⁰ But if the thing is true, that evidence of virginity was not found in the young woman,
²¹ then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father’s house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

Judges 11:29-40: ²⁹ Then the Spirit of the Lord was upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites.
³⁰ And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, “If you will give the Ammonites into my hand,
³¹ then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”
³² So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the Lord gave them into his hand.
³³ And he struck them from Aroer to the neighborhood of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim, with a great blow. So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel.
³⁴ Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah. And behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.
³⁵ And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot take back my vow.”
³⁶ And she said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to the Lord; do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, now that the Lord has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites.”
³⁷ And she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may go up and down on the mountains and weep for my virginity, I and my companions.”
³⁸ And he said, “Go.” So he sent her away for two months, and she departed, she and her companions, and wept for her virginity on the mountains.
³⁹ And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow that he had made. She had never known a man, and it became a custom in Israel
⁴⁰ that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.

2 Samuel 13:1-22: ¹ Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her.
² And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her.
³ But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man.
⁴ And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”
⁵ But Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’”
⁶ So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”
⁷ Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare food for him.”
⁸ So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes.
⁹ Then she took a pan and baked them before him, and he ate.
¹⁰ Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
¹¹ But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”
¹² But she said to him, “No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.” But he would not listen to her.
¹³ But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.

¹⁷ Then he called his young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.”
¹⁸ Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves, for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her.
¹⁹ And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. And she laid her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went.
²⁰ And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house.
²¹ But when King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.
²² But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad, for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had violated his sister Tamar.

2 Kings 4:8-37: ⁸ One day Elisha went on to Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way, he would turn in there to eat food.
⁹ And she said to her husband, “Behold now, I know that this is a holy man of God who is continually passing our way.
¹⁰ Let us make a small room on the roof with walls and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there.”
¹¹ One day he came there, and he turned into the chamber and rested there.
¹² And he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite.” When he had called her, she stood before him.
¹³ And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.”
¹⁴ And he said, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.”
¹⁵ And he said, “Call her.” And when he had called her, she stood in the doorway.
¹⁶ And he said, “At this season, about this time next year, you shall embrace a son.”
¹⁷ But the woman conceived, and she bore a son about that time the following spring, as Elisha had said to her.
¹⁸ When the child had grown, he went out one day to his father among the reapers.
¹⁹ But he said to his father, “My head, my head!” So he said to his servant, “Carry him to his mother.”
²⁰ So he picked him up and brought him to his mother. And the child sat on her lap till noon, and then he died.
²¹ And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God and shut the door behind him and went out.
²² She called to her husband and said, “Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, that I may quickly go to the man of God and come back again.”
²³ So he said, “Why will you go to him today? It is neither new moon nor Sabbath.” She said, “All is well.”
²⁴ Then she saddled the donkey, and said to her servant, “Urge the animal on; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.”
²⁵ So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.
²⁶ Run at once to meet her and say to her, ‘Is all well with you? Is all well with your husband? Is all well with the child?’ And she answered, ‘All is well.’
²⁷ And when she came to the mountain to the man of God, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came to push her away. But the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for she is in bitter distress, and the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me.”
²⁸ Then she said, “Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me’?”
²⁹ He said to Gehazi, “Tie up your garment and take my staff in your hand and go. If you meet anyone, do not greet him, and if anyone greets you, do not reply. And lay my staff on the face of the child.”
³⁰ Then the mother of the child said, “As the Lord lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So he arose and followed her.
³¹ Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. So he returned to meet him and told him, “The child has not awakened.”
³² When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed.
³³ So he went in and shut the door behind the two of them and prayed to the Lord.
³⁴ Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm.
³⁵ Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up and stretched himself upon him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
³⁶ Then he summoned Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite.” So he called her. And when she came to him, he said, “Pick up your son.”
³⁷ Then she went in and fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took up her son and went out.

Psalm 144:12-15: ¹² May our sons in their youth be like plants full grown, our daughters like corner pillars cut for the structure of a palace;
¹³ May our barns be filled with plenty,
may our sheep bring forth thousands
and ten thousands in our fields;
¹⁴ May our cattle be heavy with young, suffering no mishap or failure in bearing.
¹⁵ Blessed are the people to whom such blessings fall! Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!

Proverbs 31:10-31: ¹⁰ An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
¹¹ The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
¹² She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life.
¹³ She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.
¹⁴ She is like the ships of the merchant;
she brings her food from afar.
¹⁵ She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.

with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
¹⁷ She dresses herself with strength
and makes her arms strong.

and her hands hold the spindle.
²⁰ She opens her hand to the poor
and reaches out her hands to the needy.
²¹ She is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household are clothed in scarlet.
²² She makes bed coverings for herself;
her clothing is fine linen and purple.
²³ Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land.
²⁴ She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant.
²⁵ Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.
²⁶ She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
²⁷ She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
²⁸ Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
²⁹ “Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all.”
³⁰ Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the gates.

Isaiah 62:1-5: ¹ For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch.
² The nations shall see your righteousness,
and all the kings your glory,
and you shall be called by a new name
that the mouth of the Lord will give.
³ You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
⁴ You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married.
⁵ For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

Jeremiah 31:22-25: ²² How long will you waver, O faithless daughter? For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth: a woman encircles a man.
²³ Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I restore their fortunes: “‘The Lord bless you, O habitation of righteousness, O holy hill!’”
²⁴ And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and the farmers and those who wander with their flocks.
²⁵ For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”

Lamentations 2:10-19: ¹⁰ The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence; they have thrown dust on their heads and put on sackcloth; the young women of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground.
¹¹ My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out to the ground because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because infants and babies faint in the streets of the city.
¹² They cry to their mothers,
“Where is bread and wine?”
as they faint like a wounded man
in the streets of the city,
as their life is poured out
on their mothers’ bosom.
¹³ What can I say for you, to what compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your ruin is vast as the sea; who can heal you?
¹⁴ Your prophets have seen for you false and deceptive visions; they have not exposed your iniquity to restore your fortunes, but have seen for you oracles that are false and misleading.
¹⁵ All who pass along the way clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their heads at the daughter of Jerusalem: “Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”
¹⁶ All your enemies open their mouths against you; they hiss, they gnash their teeth, they cry: “We have swallowed her! Ah, this is the day we longed for; now we have it; we see it!”
¹⁷ The Lord has done what he purposed;
he has carried out his word,
which he commanded long ago;
he has thrown down without pity;
he has made the enemy rejoice over you
and exalted the might of your foes.
¹⁸ Their heart cried to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears stream down like a torrent day and night! Give yourself no rest, your eyes no respite!
¹⁹ “Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.”

Ezekiel 16:1-63: ¹ Again the word of the Lord came to me:
² “Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations,”
³ and say, Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
⁴ And as for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths.
⁵ No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you out of compassion for you, but you were cast out on the open field, for you were abhorred, on the day that you were born.
⁶ “And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’”
⁷ I made you flourish like a plant of the field.
⁸ “When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine.”
⁹ Then I bathed you with water and washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil.
¹⁰ I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with fine leather. I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk.
¹¹ And I adorned you with ornaments and put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck.
¹² And I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head.
¹³ Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour and honey and oil. You grew exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty.
¹⁴ And your renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord God.
¹⁵ “But you trusted in your beauty and played the whore because of your renown and lavished your whorings on any passerby; your beauty became his.”
¹⁶ You took some of your garments and made for yourself colorful shrines, and on them played the whore.
¹⁷ You also took your beautiful jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself images of men, and with them played the whore.
¹⁸ And you took your embroidered garments to cover them, and set my oil and my incense before them.
¹⁹ Also my bread that I gave you—I fed you with fine flour and oil and honey—you set before them for a pleasing aroma; and so it was, declares the Lord God.
²⁰ And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your whorings so small a matter,
²¹ Thus you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when the Egyptians handled your bosom and pressed your young breasts.”
²² And in all your abominations and your whorings you did not remember the days of your youth when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood.
²³ “And after all your wickedness (woe, woe to you! declares the Lord God),
²⁴ you built yourself a vaulted chamber and made yourself a lofty place in every square.
²⁵ At the head of every street you built your lofty place and made your beauty an abomination, offering yourself to any passerby and multiplying your whoring.
²⁶ You also played the whore with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, multiplying your whoring, to provoke me to anger.
²⁷ Behold, therefore, I stretched out my hand against you and diminished your allotted portion and delivered you to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior.
²⁸ You played the whore also with the Assyrians, because you were not satisfied; yes, you played the whore with them, and still you were not satisfied.
²⁹ You multiplied your whoring also with the trading land of Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied.
³⁰ “How sick is your heart, declares the Lord God, because you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen prostitute,
³¹ And you built your vaulted chamber at the head of every street, and made your lofty place in every square. But you were not like a prostitute, because you scorned payment.
³² Adulterous wife, who receives strangers instead of her husband!
³³ Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you gave your gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from every side with your whorings.
³⁴ And the contrary is in you from other women in your whoredoms, whereas none follows you to play the whore. And in that you give a reward, and no reward is given to you, therefore you are the contrary.
³⁵ Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of the Lord:
³⁶ Thus says the Lord God, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them,
³⁷ therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.
³⁸ And I will judge you as women who commit adultery and shed blood are judged, and bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy.
³⁹ And I will give you into their hands, and they shall throw down your vaulted chamber and break down your lofty places. They shall strip you of your clothes and take your beautiful jewels and leave you naked and bare.
⁴⁰ They shall bring up a crowd against you, and they shall stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords.
⁴¹ And they shall burn your houses and execute judgments upon you in the sight of many women. Then I will make you stop playing the whore, and you shall also give payment no more.
⁴² So will I satisfy my wrath on you, and my jealousy shall depart from you. I will be calm and will no more be angry.
⁴³ Because you have not remembered the days of your youth, but have enraged me with all these things, therefore, behold, I have returned your deeds upon your head, declares the Lord God. Behold, I have not committed this abomination that you have committed.
⁴⁴ “Behold, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’
⁴⁵ You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
⁴⁶ And your elder sister is Samaria, who lived with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you, is Sodom with her daughters.
⁴⁷ Not only did you walk in their ways and do according to their abominations; within a very little time you were more corrupt than they in all your ways.
⁴⁸ As I live, declares the Lord God, your sister Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done.
⁴⁹ Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.
⁵⁰ They were haughty and did an abomination before me. So I removed them, when I saw it.
⁵¹ Samaria has not committed half your sins. You have committed more abominations than they, and have made your sisters appear righteous by all the abominations that you have committed.
⁵² Bear your disgrace, you also, for you have intervened on behalf of your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. So be ashamed, you also, and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.
⁵³ “And I will restore their fortunes, both the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters, and I will restore your own fortunes in their midst,”
⁵⁴ that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all that you have done, becoming a consolation to them.
⁵⁵ As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former state, and you and your daughters shall return to your former state.
⁵⁶ Behold, I will deal with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant,
⁵⁷ before your wickedness was uncovered. Now you have become an object of reproach for the daughters of Edom and all her neighbors, and for the daughters of the Philistines, those all around who despise you.
⁵⁸ You bear the penalty of your lewdness and your abominations, declares the Lord.
⁵⁹ For thus says the Lord God: I will deal with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant,
⁶⁰ yet I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant.
⁶¹ Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you take your sisters, both your elder and your younger, and I give them to you as daughters, but not on account of the covenant with you.
⁶² I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord,
⁶³ that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.”

Matthew 9:18-26: ¹⁸ While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
¹⁹ And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.
²⁰ And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment,
²¹ for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.”
²² Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
²³ And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,
²⁴ He said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.
²⁵ But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
²⁶ And the report of this went through all that district.

Mark 5:21-43: ²¹ And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.
²² Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet

³⁵ While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
²⁴ And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.
²⁵ And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
²⁶ and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.
²⁷ She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
²⁸ for she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
²⁹ And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
³⁰ And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?”
³¹ And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
³² And he looked around to see who had done it.
³³ But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
³⁴ And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
³⁵ While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
³⁶ But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
³⁷ And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
³⁸ They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.
³⁹ And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
⁴⁰ But they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was.
⁴¹ Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
⁴² And immediately the girl got up and began walking, for she was twelve years old. And they were immediately overcome with amazement.
⁴³ And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Luke 8:40-56: ⁴⁰ Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.
⁴¹ And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house,
⁴² for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.
⁴³ And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone.
⁴⁴ She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.
⁴⁵ And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!”
⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.”
⁴⁷ And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed.
⁴⁸ And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
⁴⁹ While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.”
⁵⁰ But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”
⁵¹ And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.
⁵² And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.”
⁵³ And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.
⁵⁴ But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.”
⁵⁵ But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”
⁵⁶ And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

John 1:12-13: ¹² But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
¹³ who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Acts 21:8-9: ⁸ On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.

2 Corinthians 6:16-18: ¹⁶ What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
